16lb vs 15lb
« on: October 03, 2016, 07:32:17 AM »
I just wanted to get everyone's input on this. I know most everyone is using 15 lb now. Who is still rolling 16 lb? I have a Track Power Machine that is a 16, that I do still use on occasions. I believe if I didn't start getting wrist pain, I may not have switched to 15, but I did a little over 5 years ago, and I do not have any wrist pain now. So, how many of you believe that a 16 lb will give you better pin action, or carry? Or are today's balls so good that 16 lb balls are not necessary.
There's two kinds of music METAL and bullshit!

in my humble opinion it depends on age factor & individual skill levels. I have used both weights & see no differences.i am 79 yrs old & still carry a 200 plus average.

I think the reason 15 lbs has become the norm is that the environment rewards revs and speed today.  In the low friction environment 30 years ago the added weight of 16 lbs was the best way to minimize deflection for enhanced carry.  Today there is so much available friction that the increased rev rate more than offsets thedecreased weight.  Note that on the very long ( low friction ) badger pattern some pros opt for 16 lbs.

Obviously, we all have our preferences, so you should always go with whatever you think you throw best; however, from what I remember, the USBC Ball Motion Study seemed to indicate that 15lb balls produced the best carry.

Then perhaps we should be throwing helium filled balloons at the pins.

I am in the process of switching from 16 to 15, for wrist pain.  I started last year, due to not being able to throw without lots of pain.  after the summer off, I have no pain even with the 2 or 3 16lb balls I have kept.  but I think I am sticking with 15 for preventative reasons.

I throw 16 lb. I Do not see myself changing to a lighter weight anytime soon since I am still comfortable throwing 16 and also the difficulty in replacing most of the balls I own--most are not easily available anymore.
