What does Pro Shop appearance tell you?
« on: December 31, 2014, 08:38:32 AM »
Let's say that your pro shop meets your criteria for what's most important to you.  Where does the presentation, organization, appearance, or cleanliness of the shop rank to you in terms of importance from 1-10, 1 being not important whatsoever, to 10 being very important.

What does it say to you?  Does a dirty or unorganized shop say the operator is lazy and doesn't really care, or does it say they're so busy they can't get to it?  Likewise, does a clean shop tell you the operator has a high attention to detail, or that they must not be very busy because they have plenty of time to clean?  Or does it say neither?

I will put in the catagory of a 9. You have to care about your buisness. No one is perfect, thats why its not a 10, but I dont want to go to a buisness where they dont seem to care about thier appearence.

Clean the shop and dress the part.  You can be an unprofessional slob in your free time.  This includes keeping the work benches clean and ball shavings off the floor.  If you keep things tidy as you work it takes no extra time.  Dusting, vacuuming and cleaning the windows in the display area once or twice a week takes minimal time also.  If a shop is so busy they feel they don't have time they should be able to afford to pay one of the kids around the center to do it.

It tells me if they are a professional who takes pride in their work, or just another hole puncher that just happens to have a shop instead of a drill press in their garage. I'll pay well for a professional but not for some hack who obviously doesn't care about their business.

I will even extend that further. When I first started bowling a few years ago, I bought my first ball from a local pro shop. It was a mess and the owner was the same way. Sloppy, unprofessional and just generally lazy. Currently this same guy runs two ball brands which I will not mention, but will never have either of them in my bag, even for free.

Knowing how he ran his business when it was just a pro shop tells me all I need to know about the guy. I prefer to spend my money for quality.

He ran a clean shop, work area organized, and wore $40 - $70 golf shirts. 😃

Out of the several pro shops in the OKC area, one in particular is run by a former touring pro who won something like 12 titles or a bit more. The drilling is very accurate and layout knowledge good, but the shop is the most dirtiest and disorganized of all shops around. Yet it is the No 1 shop prefered by bowlers because of this person's knowledge and drilling accuracy.

Number 1 shop yet it is still a mess.  Just think how good it could be if it was clean and professional looking.  I've never been into a Golfsmith or Dick's or Best Buy that I felt was dirty.  Why would it be acceptable in a bowling pro shop?  That shop is definitely losing customers if the shop is that messy.  First impression is everything, especially with the once a year customers that don't know about the operators ability and knowledge, they just assume the person knows what they are doing.

If you are refering to my post about the OKC shop, FYI, that shop is overly busy and I mean overly busy from the minute it opens until the minute it closes. No lack of customers by any means at this OKC shop.

The cleaner and more organized and better presented it is can only help the overall appeal. Looking like a dungeon is going to limit how long someone may want to spend in such a place.

For what my opinion in worth, it should reflect what is currently occurring. If the shop is extremely busy when I arrive, I understand if there is some issues.

If I arrive and am the only one there, and the operator is in back sleeping off the hangover, I do not understand that. But if they are busy cleaning from a previous day, OK, understood.

To be cluttered, day in and day out - not the shop I would frequent. There is always time to clean or bring in some additional help to accomplish it.

When I came to town back in the dark ages (1980). I had a fitting issue that I couldn't get solved (the side of my thumb would look be tore up at 3 to 4 games).

After I got into the bowling scene I asked who was the best ball driller and fitter in town. Only one name came up.

But they all warned me about the character that ran the shop.

I didn't care, I was looking for answers.

His shop was in the oldest center in town, I went in and there was a guy who was 5 ft 3 in and a shirt that was covered in dried plug. There was heavy dust on all the shelves and ball chips everywhere.

He was personable and measured me up using an adjustable measuring ball. In no time he had me throwing the ball to him in the air pain free.

I had him plug and re-drill my favorite ball to the specs. Loved it and never looked back.

He was always there when he said he would be, he was always willing to help your game, he would stand behind anything he sold and warrant it.

I bought several new balls from him over the next few years. I could have gotten the balls elsewhere for a little less money but I was simply looking for quality.

He always was busy often having waiting list on his door.

About 8 years later I started working in the shop on Saturdays to help him out. The knowledge gained was worth more than any pay.

I cleaned the shop quit a bit after that. But the service never changed.

He drilled for bowlers all over the state some coming over 200 miles just to see him.

Almost every good bowler had come to him at some time to get fitted. He had his process and the knack. Many would simply get a ball plugged and then go somewhere else and have them copy the specs but often they couldn't even do that.

I continued to help him for about 15 years when he retired.

He helped Justin Hromek as a youth and when Justin retired off the tour he taught him how he measured and drilled. Justin learned well and I still go to him today if I want a new ball.

Sometimes other factors can far outweigh appearances.

A clean and tidy shop doesn't always equal good service. It is possible to have a pro shop owner more worried about keeping the shop in order than providing good service.

My number one concern is getting top notch service. Neat and Tidy is an added bonus.

I'd rather the operator focus more on matching a bowler to the ball.  That includes fit, type of ball, surface, drilling, etc.  Hopefully, he can find someone to help him keep the shop clean if he is too busy to do it himself.

A good operator will earn the reputation due to his abilities that a messy shop won't turn most away.  However, it's best to not lose any due to something so simple.

I've seen a few shops get kids to help with cleaning and the shop can give them a good deal on plug work that's typically needed.

Pinbuster, I miss that old fart as well.  Crazy good attention to detail.  I think you overestimate him at 5 ft 3 in though.

Even the good drillers should have a clean shop. If they're detailed in how they layout and hit lines, why not put effort into cleaning up the shop. I've been to shops where the guy(s) are  great at their job and had a clean shop. One of them posted on here and he and his partner always kept the shop clean and provided great customer service.

I've been to other shops owned by tour pros and local guys too who all do great job in their craft and customer service, and these people kept a clean shop. Even my current driller is busy man and people see him from miles away, he too keeps a clean shop. Why can't others do it too?

I used to train hotel restaurant workers in customer service, and people do "eat with their eyes." Or like my dad always said too..."if a chicks feet is dirty, so is her Virginia" if his shop is filthy, so is his house lol
