ball for my son PLASTIC/URETHANE ?
« on: November 24, 2004, 03:55:28 AM »
My son is learning to bowl.. 10yrs old.. He rolls the ball around 11-13 mph...he's got the idea down for putting spin on the ball..why I'm asking is a gentlemen at one of the houses we bowl in has a 10# groove urethane{ blue sanded} ball CHEAP he wants to sell.. would this be a wrong choice to make for him ? should I just get him a plastic ball and let him learn more of the fundamentals or go ahead and get him this ball ? Some thoughts from you guys would be nice.. I don't want to get him started wrong..

THANKS

I would say urethane would be ok, because it really doesnt have much more hook then plastic (at least most of the time) and is a good starting hook ball.

At 10 he should be strong and coordinated enough to attempt to throw a hook, not hardcore, all out, pro bowler type of thing, but it should be ok for him to do it on a week to week basis.

XXXL only comes 14 through 16.  Some of their balls come 13 and do have standard cores but they don't make anything lighter even with pancake blocks.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.

I had the same problem for my son at the beginning of the year...he's 9...we ended up going with a 10lb savage pearl (off ebay for something like $30 shipped)...works well for him.

THANKS everyone.. some very nice advice.. He's 10 but built like a 12-13yr old..he's about 5' 100+# so yes thanks.. I think that 10# would not do well for him..I'll keep looking...   Maybe Santa got one for me too... LOL

I know hammer has modified cores in the deal and the BBP. Not sure about other companies.

THANKS again everyone.. I think I'll go with a 12# Groove for now..we just got back from bowling and had him rolling a 12#er.. he did very well with it,he hit the 100's every game, and reaching his high of 125..345 total.. was very happy with him.. I know a ball fitted for him will help allot,as for it did me..
again my thanks to all for some great advice...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

RedNeckRoller -- At your son's age, he's going to want to see the ball break.  I would suggest getting him an entry level reactive resin ball.  All the major ball manufacturers have a line, Ebonite Tornados, Brunswick Power Grooves, Columbia Scouts, etc., and they're all good and similar in price.  --  JohnP
