Ball for New Bowler
« on: August 16, 2009, 01:03:44 PM »
my dad will be bowling in his first bowling league ever and has bowled maybe 5 times his whole life (he's 52). I finally convinced him to get into it for male bonding time Tuesday nights. he is going to get a ball drilled up this coming week and i want to make sure he gets the right type. I want him to get drilled for fingertip but dont want a ball thats unmanageable on the lanes. I'm going to teach him to go straight down the second arrow with a small backend move into the pocket. what ball would you suggest here? I was thinking maybe a tropical storm or hammer cherry vibe or brunswick avalanche. something weak on the backend and with length but a ball that will be fun for him. we will be on a second shift league with wood lanes. any help here would be great, thanks!

even the power groove line is ok....if he likes the game by next year...step him up then. Main thing is get a well fitted ball.

I would look into either the  Avalanche like you said or maybe an Onyx Vibe. Both would be great for a beginner and if he starts to join more leagues or bowl in tournaments both are also very versatile.

Totally agree with those two choices.

The first ball that popped into my head was the Onyx Vibe.

I'd go for the Avalanche Solid. it's smooth, versatile, and maintains a decently strong reaction without anywhere near too much power.

It depends on his natural level of talent.  If he's at the low end of the natural talent range I'd go with a plastic ball and a conventional grip for starters.  If he's at the high end, fingertip will be OK and I'd recommend an entry level reactive resin ball - Tornado, Power Groove, etc.  Be realistic in evaluating his talent level or you'll mismatch him with ball and/or grip and he'll end up frustrated and quit.  --  JohnP

stay clear of the tropical storm! the ball is all about skid/snap.onyx looks good or even the natural with maybe some cover tweaks.

I agree about the tropical's. I would recommend the Smoke by AMF.

so we went bowling tonight. He used a house ball and bowled 111 91 103 so obviously not much skill here. big thing with him right now is proper footwork, follow through and wrist control. i think starting him off with a fingertip drill might be too big a step. from what i've said, does this change ball selection as well?

How did he bowl ? Straight up the middle ? try to put a small hook ? That would make a difference in what I'd suggest.

If he's pretty much a straight bowler, go with a plastic ball, T Zone, W/D. If you has or wants to put a small hook to it, I'd say a Tornado maybe a Power Groove but not much more than that. Have him learn target, hit the target first. Doesn't have to be the pocket but a mark, a board. Once he has that down then go for a break point then the pocket, slow steps. If you rush someone they can get frustrated and then it's not fun and they may well loose interest.

As he's just starting out, I doubt he'll have a great amount of revs.  You might want to consider getting him something with a bit more "pop" than the typical entry level reactive.

I'd suggest the Columbia 300 Freeze.  The new black/silver looks pretty "cool", though you might want to knock the polish off it with a 4000 abralon.

I'm not throwing Brunswick currently, but I had a couple of Avalanches (pearl and solid ) and those  are really hard to beat.  they are simple enough for an entry level bowler to use, but versatile enough that they can be used even when the bowlers skills grow appreciably.

They have the legendary PK18 cover ( except the slide ), and the lightbulb Rhino Pro core allows for more stability than the high RG power grooves.

I think I might go with a pretty basic drilling as well, something designed to give the ball predictable, stable roll and reaction like a RICO or something similar.

Definitely use a conventional grip for now.  Either a plastic or entry level reactive resin ball, whichever makes you happier (he won't care).  --  JohnP
