What causes the 7-10 and big 4?
« on: February 28, 2005, 08:45:33 AM »
I know other leaves, but I'm not quite sure on these ones.  What factors lead to the 7-10 and the big 4 (4-6-7-10)??

Reason I ask, and you'll tell me i'm insane, is because i want to leave them in practice games, to try to pick them up.  Yeah, I'm that pathetic.  I LOVE shooting at splits.  I get REALLY close, really often.  I've nearly made the 7-10 a few times, and haven't left the big 4 much.  But how do you leave them?  I'm seriously that crazy that i'll actually try to leave them, so i can try to pick them up, since i almost never leave those specifically.

YEah, I know you're thinking "wow this kid is messed up", but there's nothing i look forward to in bowling, more than trying to pick up a split.

the easiest way probably is to just throw a slight hook into the nose, maybe even with a plastic ball so you can control the hook a little more.  throw it nice and easy, let it ease into the nose, and get it on an angle so that it just goes straight into the headpin.  its really luck of the draw i guess.  if we could pinpoint our leaves, wouldnt we all just keep getting strikes

i would love to take the 7-10 off a clean rack, it would sure make the spare a heck-of-alot-easier.

blowout 7-10 i think we concluded was the headpin stopping the 5 from taking out the 7 with a flat 10 leave.(when discussed about the back to back 7-10 on the pba telecast a few weeeks ago)

Nope, that's more of a goal, than the kind of "rush" i get when i get to wing the ball down the lane and convert a split.  Usually because i can do some sort of excessive celebration.  I'm kind of like the white TO of bowling.

Shoot, just come bowling with me. I can set you up the worst splits you've ever seen. We'll just play strike/spare I'll shoot for strikes, you get all I miss. Yeah, it gets that bad sometimes.

7-10 is caused from the ball reacting too late, and too sharp. It hits the head pin sideways, and goes through the 3 straight, barely kicking the 6. The 7 stays due to the lack of dominoe effect

So perhaps a no-thumbed plastic shot would do the trick?

Just adding on to what everyone says, I leave most of my "pocket" 7-10's when the ball comes in too sharp and too late.  Just like leaving the smash 7 on a high hit, and then leaving a 10 on a hit to the side of the 10 pin.

While most would say it's goofy to intentionally leave a split, I would say more power to you.  First off, if you know how to leave it, then you should know how to avoid it.  Second, you get the practice at throwing the shot.  I know I am at my best when I can throw the ball and either call my leave before the ball is at the arrows, or when I can intentionally leave 4 pins or 10 pins.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.
