How Do You Fix League Bowling?
« on: February 11, 2011, 05:31:34 AM »
Here's the points you have to remember:

1) All bowlers of all averages want to be able to win or be competitive in the league

2) The league will pay money  (no recreational trophy leagues)

3) Bowlers will be allowed to bowl with their friends, wives, girlfriends. No average caps, minimums team averages or draft leagues.

Basically you have been hired by a bowling center to fill their house with leagues year after year. The 160 average teams will quit if the 220 average teams always win.  The 220 average teams will quit if the handicappers always win.  Where is the magic balance that keeps everyone as happy as possible and the complaining to a minimum.

Let's hear how you are going to do it.

It's a pessimistic view, I'll agree, but what I see from society tells me that's the way it is, and not the other way around.
~9: I'd say "realistic" not "pessimistic"

in my opiniion league is boring i want a harder shot but people like to see scores. im not the best bowler but i can score on about anything and like to bowl on conditions that make me move adjust and read the lanes not camo out and as long as i hit between the 3rd and 4th arrow im in the pocket.  truth is that alot of bowlers could give a ratts arse about sanctioning if the house would offer a league where people didnt have to sanction it would be full of people there for fun and trying to improve but you wouldnt have your bowlers that are capable of honor scores in it. i personally think that there should be alot more unsancyioned fun leagues where people can develope a passion for the game and improve then maybe move up to the sanctioned leagues to see where they stand, i have some good friends that want to get into legues but dont want to be looked down at because they only avg 95 or 100 bowling a bunch of house hacks that and they dont see why they should have to pay a sanction cause they feel they wont get awards and have no drive to compete in tournaments.

I don't believe you can fix league bowling.

First society has changed.

The amount of entertainment available, quick gratification, me first attitude, everything is about money, the way jobs are structured, etc, etc, all conspire against bowling in a weekly set time league environment.

Secondly bowling has changed.

Many leagues had little prize funds with only trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and trophies for high games and series.

With the increase in scoring you have generated the haves and have nots.

Looking at men's leagues only.

40 years ago the averages in a mens league would be 140 to 200. Most of the bowlers would average 160 to 180.

With 75% handicap, which was common at the time, most bowlers were giving up 5 pins or less and at most 15 pins. Even with 5 man teams you were seldom spotting more than 50 pins.

Any bowlers felt that with an extra mark they could catch and beat anyone in the league.

Today the averages vary from 140 to 230. Most seem to be groups in the 180 range. With 80% handicap  they are giving up 10 pins, if you average 140 you are giving up nearly 20 pins to the high average bowlers. They no longer feel they have a chance most nights with spots of 100 pins of more, that is a lot of marks to make up.

Also the better bowlers would move towards limited handicap/scratch leagues. You didn't see stacked teams in handicap leagues.

Plus virtually all leagues were 5 person. A high average individual or two on a team didn't throw it out of whack as much as they do in 3 and 4 person leagues.

Higher ave bowlers can improve as Omni said however them making improvements is much more difficult than Lower average players making improvments. This is where Omni shows his lack of bowling Knowledge.

The point was made earlier that any Money/Scratch Leagues should sport compliant and I agree with that. IMO lane conditions need to be toughened up. You WILL lose some people, but you will gain some back and get some others that were not bowling before. To be honest it doesnt even need to Sport Shots, beefing up a THS is easy Put more units right of ten and take a little off the heads and move it down to the midlane watch score plumet
