Ball Polish - which one?
« on: February 20, 2011, 02:03:49 PM »
What's the best?  What do you use and why?  I have a few balls that I've sanded down and they're skippin a little too much off the dry and I've never used polish before.  I know I can take them to a finer grit, but something about a shinny ball is always nice and pretty...ha!  Any help you all can offer as a community would be much appreciated!

I read on another forum that mothers mag and wheel polish was a good bet for polishing a bowling ball and so far it seems to be doing the trick well.  Lots of length but still hooks well off the dry.

Clean and Sheen is not specifically a polish. It is more of a rubbing compound
It is meant to apply to plugs that have been routed and roughly sanded. It is a one step compound intended to take that 320 or 400 grit area to about 1000 grit and add a light polish to it. It helps drillers finish a ball quickly.

It can be used as a rough finishing compound if you want a very light shine to a fairly rough surface. Track used to use it to provide what they termed a "compound polish".

Clean and Sheen is actually suppose to give you 1500 finish. I use it when that is what I am trying to get to, or thereabouts. Still, it is a polish, just like Rough Buff from Brunswick.

Much more could be said, but the bottom line is, best depends on what you are looking for. All polishes are not the same.  Some have fine "grit" some have no grit. By small quantities, and try different ones. All around, Bean's Sauce is about as good as any. Remember that the  ball surface before you apply the polish is going to dictate, in large part, what reaction you get after applying polish.

I have been using Black Magic for a long time and our pro shop uses it as well. Polishes the ball well, but does not reduce the hook potential of the ball. I have used car polishes back in the old days and you get a pretty ball that no longer hooks like it was designed. Now if what you are needing is to reduce the hook due to dry lanes that would be an excellent choice, but if just needing to get the ball down the lane easier and create a stronger back end then the Black Magic is an excellent choice.

I've had most success with Ebonite Factory Finish years back and currently I'm using Ultimate Black Magic polish. It's easy to apply whether you have a spinner or doing it by hand. I'm surprised I haven't heard more people on here mentioned about the Snake Oil because I've read so many good things about it and thought about trying it myself since I polish by hand.

Clean and Smooth was supposed to give a 1500 grit finish. It says that on my bottles.
Clean and Sheen was meant to smooth 320 - 400 grit rough surfaces to approximately 1000 grit US/CAMI. The bottle says it is meant to leave a rough or matte surface. I've found you can get a slight amount of shine if you leave it on the spinner for a shot period of time, while pressing firmly.

I use nothing but Snake Oil on all my balls.  Every now and then Beans Secret Sauce.

+1. Snake Oil doesn't change the underlying grit, and I haven't a polish job with the product I haven't liked.

+1 for Snake Oil

Hey Guys, sorry I didn't jump on this topic earlier, the new layout and ads on ball reviews has been driving me away. I wish they would revert back to the old site.

As for polishes we manufacture two; Snake Oil - which provides a snappy medium condition surface and UFO - which uses an organic extender to combat dry lanes (6 to 8 feet more length). Are they the best? I'd like to believe so, and we do have quite a large cult following of customers....but for a real answer, the best is the polish that matches your equipment and lane conditions. Both of our polishes are gritless, which allows accuracy for replicating OOB conditions as well as giving a greater control for experimenting. Out of an 8oz. bottle you should be able to get 40+ polishes easy, which can grow to 60-80 if you devote a terry cloth towel to the product and simply reactivate the creme base with water or Remedy RX and a smidge of new product. Not to mention our entire product line is manufactured by us in the United States and has the best tech support (and tech support operator....cough cough ME!)

If you can wait until tomorrow March 1st.....some of our products are (maybe UFO and Snake Oil ) are going to go on sale until March 8th.

I'd like to put in a good word for UFO as well.  I use this on my plastic ball and my MoJave for toasted heads.  Excellent skid and seems durable.  I have used snake oil as well and to me it is unique from the other polishes.  Next surface adjustment I put on my Anaconda i'm going to use snake oil on top of a fresh 2000.

Got me some black magic (8oz for 11 bucks at local pro shop)...wore my arms out putting it on there and getting the best shine I could by hand.  Not too shabby to me tho.  We'll see how they perform now.  I really need to get a spinner or that thing that goes on my drill...
