Is it sandbagging to use polyester?
« on: March 03, 2011, 01:30:12 AM »
Since someone made a complaint about it in my league, I was just curious whether using a polyester ball as your strike ball would be considered sandbagging?

For purposes of the argument, I would note that I am still averaging over 210 with my Track Spare.

It's tough to answer, and you will have people looking at it either way they want.  HOWEVER, I think the most important fact here is last year's average.  If you averaged 232 last year, you must have put up some numbers.  And in averaging 232, I'm sure that whatever the handicap was, if you hit that average every game, you would be ahead of someone getting handicap and hitting THEIR average every game.  So while someone may say you're using plastic to sandbag . . I see it the other way.  Obviously you have much more of an advantage bowling to your potential.  Now I'm sure you'll pop in a pretty big game once and a while, but if I could count how many times I've heard it announced at the bowling alley that so and so with a 150 average shot 240, I'd need the legs of a millipede to add it all up.  And averaging that high on a house shot with reactive equipment gets old.  It's not fun like people think it would be, the only challenge you have week in and week out is carrying, that's it, and that's for all intents and purposes out of your hands, it's nothing you have control over to improve.  It really feels like you've gone as far as you can, so you start looking for something else to spice it up a bit, or to change, a fresh challenge so to speak.  If I had to guess, I'd say that's what led you to plastic.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

If you averaged 232 in this same league last year, but used a ball with a higher performance rating, then I can see how throwing the sandbagging flag would seem logical.

If you averaged 232 in the same league last year and were using a plastic ball, then I'm sorry you are in such a slump this year.

Only you and the man upstairs know your true intentions.  It's pretty hard to say without having bowled on the condition you are seeing.

Most tournaments take the higher average of the last two years.

Be good, or be good at it.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Lmao!!  Man, you must be my twin.  Im down on my average about 15-20 over last year because the modified shot they put out at my house on wood lanes is so freaking dry.  Funny thing is that I to have been using my Track Spare to great success as my strike ball.  By no means would I consider it sandbagging.  In fact, anyone who has made comments, I've challenged to put their money where their mouth is.  When they see me shooting 250+ with my plastic, and they are shooting 180's with their high performance stuff, I just laugh.  Some people just can't swallow using urethane or plastic if the lanes call for it.  Keep on rolling that plastic man.  YOu are not alone out there.  Bowling alleys are trying to save money not putting enough volumn of oil on the lanes.  Plastic or Urethane are the best alternatives in my neck of the woods.  The Avalanche Urethane around our area has been responsible for the most multiple high scores and series in our bowling alley.
