Well was looking at the new usbc rule changes for 2014-15 season, saw this change.

Of course, after I had just convinced the senior bowlers that they could polish their balls during league play last season.

Any reason why?

I don't see anything that says why, I would assume because it is altering the surface.

i was under the impression that this was already illegal during competition as said above it is altering surface. i know at least usbc collegiate events they site the "dry towel" rule and assumed it was this rule.

No it wasn't illegal heres from  last years rule book:

Rule 18 – Bowling Ball – Altering Surface
Altering the surface of a bowling ball by the use of abrasives while bowling in USBC competition is
prohibited.
All bowling balls so altered must be removed from the competition. (See the USBC Equipment
Specifications Manual on BOWL.com.)
NOTE: If it is shown the bowler had prior knowledge his/her actions were in violation of Rule 18, the
game(s) in which the violation occurred is (are) subject to forfeiture. In addition, the bowler is
subject to dismissal from the league and suspension of membership.
Competition is defined as the remainder of the current game and remaining game(s) in the
series being bowled.
The use of approved cleaning agents such as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and polishing
machines is permissible.

c. Polishing – You are permitted to polish the surface of your bowling ball prior to certified
competition. However, once tournament or league play begins, the use of a ball spinner is
strictly prohibited; only an automated, self-contained polishing machine may be used.

A lot of seniors thought it was illegal and I had to show them that it was legal.  Should have left well enough alone.

After some thought, I came up with perhaps because there are now machines out there that do both resurfacing and polishing.  How would it be policed as to what was being done?

Or is it because Brunswick is being sold off?  (LustreKing)
: )

I doubt that is why, but now the machines that do both resurfacing and polishing may have made them think about it and finally get rid of that part of the rule.

That lustre king part is real old ( I remember back when it actually said lustre king in the rule book) and should have been removed long ago.

I'd like to find the old rule book that supposedly said you couldn't leave the bowlers circle except to go to the restroom! and see if that was real.

someone told me that long ago back when I first started and that's why they had the button on the monitor/projector that called the waitress.

I don't remember that rule.  I first started bowling ABC in '71 so it may have been earlier than that.  Even back in the early '70's  bowlers would wander - collecting or checking on jackpots, checking scores of other bowlers/teams, going to the bar or bathroom, etc.

And I too remember seeing Lustre King mentioned by name in the rulebooks - I think the earlier polishing machines used wire brushes so they were excluded because of the surface change.

I always suspected that was probably just somebody's league rule from long back, not a actual ABC rule.

There use to be a little 10 lane house here. First time I bowled a city tournament, they had part of it there and they had one of those old machines! About the size of two shoe boxes side by side, it had coin slot on top of it.

I looked down in it and saw those brushes and thought there was no way I'd drop a ball in that thing. I think they were nylon brushes in it though.

The first Lustre King that I can remember seeing was about 1969-70 timeframe.  Prior to that, the center had the old (AMF?) one that had a clear top cover that you lifted and put the ball in the left side where the wire brushes were and it cleaned the ball there, then kicked the ball over to the right side where I assume the polish was applied and buffed.  I remember as a youth bowler, someone showed me that you could reach into the machine and pull a spring on the coin chute to get a free cleaning on those old ones.

This rule causes arguments during league. Putting the rule back to not using the ball polish machine is still going to cause issues.

The way rule is stated once competition starts, anyone placing their ball in the machine, that ball is not allowed to be used for league that night.

Imagine a line of bowlers trying to use the ball polish machine. League starts at 7:00 PM. Any ball put into the machine after 7:00PM is considered an illegal ball.

If I saw someone using the ball polish machine immediately after a league had started, it wouldn't bother me. People work, not everyone can get to the lanes on time.

But there are some people out there that love to shove the rules on everyone else. What happens when that scenario comes up?

No matter which way the USBC does on the rules for altering a ball surface, it will always be a problem.

USBC Rule 18 – Bowling Ball – Altering Surface
The use of polishing machines during competition will be prohibited.

I can see this. When you think about it, with ball cleaners like PowerHouse Energizer, Tac-Up, etc., the ball polishing machines you see in an alley are either gone or rarely used. Why use those when you can get a towel, a few squirts of the aforementioned cleaners on said towel, put the ball on a spinner, and off you go..?

The handheld stuff all but killed the (use of) ball polishing machines.

Why? because they are two totally different things!

The ball polishing machines are not cleaners, they are polishers.

You put a dirty ball in the polisher, it just grinds the dirt and grime into the cover.

That's why you should use your towel and cleaner on the ball before you put it in the polisher.

not necessarily, according to the rules competition doesn't start until someone rolls the first ball for score anywhere in the league.

So you could possibly have a few minutes after 7, depending on when the first ball is actually rolled.

That's why you have to watch out in practice/warmup.

Say your on lane 20 and have 5 mins left and you want to alter your ball, but the bowlers on say lane 1&2 got done and started bowling for score already you can't alter the surface even though you have 5 mins of practice left.

bradl's comment about the ball polishing machines is right up there with polish boy's comment about negative top weight auto-correcting the ball into going straight.

The number of mis informed people that post on this site thinking they know what they are talking about makes me shake my head every day.

A lot of bowlers don't have a clue about the (ball surface) rules and I see people breaking them during leagues.

If you have something to say, then please say it and correct me so I can understand instead of sitting back and being judgmental.

It's amazing how some people open their mouths, yet say so little, to sound like an idiot convention. So how about taking the high road and being productive, because lately, you haven't, or lack the ability to.

Don't take it personal....it's a forum.

anyway, I've been on here since 2004 and when I started out, I posted some things that got me scratching my head years later. I learned to know the facts before posting, and if I didn't know, I asked. Also, I learned not to talk "sheet" about anyone, because one day you'll be bowling next to him lol.....

We've had worse characters on this side of the site, but most of them now just hang out on the Non Misc section lol.....

Oh, believe me, I know exactly what you mean, and no offense taken at all. I just despise holier-than-thou attitudes that post nothing of substance to a thread. If you're going to say something, then please say it. Otherwise, I can get all the trolling I would ever want in the non-misc. section. Plenty of 'turd' battles going on over there to last a long LONG while.
