heavy oil ball
« on: December 17, 2011, 06:47:27 PM »
Hi,

I'm currently looking for a heavy oil ball. My current arsenal includes Ebonite Gamebreaker, Brunswick Blast Zone, and a Storm Victory Road. My ball speed is around 13mph, I'm at the low end of a tweener for rev rate, and I have a 165 league average for THS. I'm bowling a PBA experience league so I'm shooting the heavier oil shots and wanting a ball that I can throw cross lane instead of straight up 10-15. Any suggestions?

Your Blast Zone is a hybrid (solid & pearl). Have you tried adding surface to it?  Take it down to 1000 abralon and give it a try.
Of the newer releases my Nexus solid seems to handle oil easily, and it takes surface changes very well.

I'm curious why you need to throw crosslane when your ballspeed and revrate would tend to have you favor the track (except on Shark).  On Shark you would still be playing pretty direct but a little left of the track (around 12-14).  If you drill a super hook monster you'll probably end up having your balls burn up in the heads and do nothing downlane if you play left of where the pattern dictates.  The pros play the track on the fresh (except the boomers), which is all you will see in a PBA experience league.

+1. The Blast Zone already is a heavy oiler with a big hook potential - you have to see whether it "works" on your lanes (going through skid/hook/roll phases) or not. On oily lanes, you are normally limited to straighter lines, and heavy oilers are rather desgined to finish the 3 abovementioned phases and hit effectively than showing a big Hollywood hook.

If you WANT to play big, I think you'd less need a high traction oil ball (which you IMHO already have), rather a ball that goes long and uses little space and dry area for a late hook and roll, esp. with your lower speed and revs.

My vague suggestion would therefore be a strong, polished pearl ball, drilled for length and a quick PSA transition.

I am not certain about a ball recommendation, but I'd assume that a Nexus Pearl or a Hell Raiser could be a good basis, at least on fresh lanes with good head oil and a defined back end. Such a ball might be of limited use in your arsenal, though, so I'd agree with Russell that a milder ball for a more direct line should be the more versatile solution.

Shawn,

The Nexus Solid is the strongest ball I've seen on the lanes EVER! So if you are absolutely wanting the most hook possible, the Nexus Solid is a no brainer.

However, is your ball speed 13 mph off your hand or at the camera by the pins? If it is 13 mph off your hand, I think the Nexus line might be too much and would suggest a more "medium-strong" symmetric like a Leathal Revolver.

So by my estimation that puts you at around 15.5 off your hand. I think you could handle the Nexus Solid then. There's no doubt that it hooks and the best part is that it really does corner as advertised. A really special piece! If you can't move in with that ball then it just isn't meant to be
