Nobody is exact. Even the pros have 2-3 boards when attacking the pattern correctly. When things get super tight that is a good indication that your feet are in the wrong spot (as someone said earlier) or you are in the wrong ball.
That said I am always targeting a single board. I am usually telling myself as I am at the ball return some thing like 25 to 9 or 34 to 13. This is the board my feet are on and the board my target is on.
I occasionally spot bowl when the lanes are toast. At those times I am very deep with my feet and aiming at the reflection of the 10 pin or 6 pin (or rangefinder if available). Although this is much less accurate it has led to nice scores in the past due to the extreme speed and angle it produces for me.
I use targets up and down the lanes as a pattern breaks down. When I first line up any THS I start at 25 looking at 8 at the arrows. If I am seeing plenty of oil here I will start by moving my feet right and bringing my target back to the dots. As the pattern breaks down my feet are moving left, my target is moving left and usually down the lane some.
Hope this helps.
