Ball Rack
« on: December 31, 2010, 07:49:44 AM »
Hope loading this photo works out.  I built this in about 4 hours at home.  I used 1" stair treads for the top, bottom and sides and used 1/2" cabinet grade plywood for the back.  I put it together using my Kreg pocket hole jig and glue.  The racks are 7/8" black steel pipe with pipe foam insulation for padding.  Cost was around $130.  I know, I have too many bowling balls.  At least the wife is happy that they are not all over the house!

good job!
Like the foam insulation over the 7/8" steel pipe.

Stair treads may be a little expensive??
They appear pale. Were they oak?

I made one with 1" oak dowels. They did add some expense. Next one I used 1 1/4" poplar dowels.cheaper, but not cheap. May try the steel pipe next - good idea! thanks!

Oh, next time try masonite for the backing to save a few bucks, but plywood is nicer looking

Oh, he achieved that. But when I saw $130, I realized when I built my first one, I was also not interested in being cheap but in its being nice looking, as well as purposeful. Then I realized that in next ones I built, I tried being more practical as well as making it nice looking. I just offered some hints, in case he felt the same way. There can be several steps or levels between cheap and expensive.

Perhaps he was more interested in a nice looking piece than being cheap.  Looks real nice, sigma

The most expensive part of the project was the steel pipe.  It was about $8 for each 4 foot peice.  It would probably be less expensive to buy longer peices and have them cut to size.  I think the treads are poplar but wouldn't swear to it.  I used them because they are a true 1" thickness and not 3/4".  Happy New Year all.
