Is urethane a must have in every bowler's bag?
« on: October 17, 2016, 05:18:10 PM »
With the resurgence of urethane releases in today's bowling ball market, are they really a must have in every bowler's bag?

Urethane is very condition specific but I don't think you can generalize on who can or cant benefit from it.

A generalization is what most people find to be true most of the time. So I'll reiterate -- in general, in most situations that bowlers see, Urethane is not going to be the best option for low to medium rev bowlers.

I have no doubt your success in the senior high roller sweeper. In the high roller environment, my Hammer Black Urethane would be in my bag for that "just in case" situation. There is too much on the line to assume anything. Along the same lines, I finished a sport shot tournament with a 300-300 using a Motiv Ascent to win $2,000. One of my few moments in the sun. The irony is that I only found one situation in the next 2 years where the ball was the best choice. I gave it away to a Junior bowler last year.

The question isn't if there are unique situations where anyone could find value in Urethane, but how often they occur. For most bowlers, it's almost never. Right now I'm bowling 3 leagues in 3 different houses. One fresh THS, one second shift THS that is wet/dry misery, and a sport shot challenge league. Urethane is MIA as a first ball choice (for all bowlers) in all three leagues. I believe this is far more usual than unusual.

I agree.  I was really only addressing the higher average bowler who normally carries 4 or more balls to league and tournaments.  I very rarely use urethane in a high scoring league environment.

I carry urethane all the time because it doubles as my spare ball. It rarely gets used as my primary piece but when it has it has been incredibly valuable.

Without giving away the results, watch the recently completed WSOB Cheetah Championship. You'll see a real interesting contrast between the use of Urethane and Resin.

Yea, I noticed that too. Three Storm staffers, and the balls used were at the opposite ends of the chart strength wise.

Along those lines, Mike Wolfe was using a Scandal. Maybe I'll find a use for mine.  ;D

Good call, I was thinking same thing. Really showed how quickly it can get ugly using urethane, can't go left to right at all. Very ugly reaction in championship game.

That's the point I was originally referring to. Tang was boxed in with the transition, and he had no way out. He had a great look with Urethane when they were fresh and he could square up. When that disappeared, he was toast. The game was over in the first few frames.

That was a great example of the strength and limitatons of urethane
