I hope everyone comes out okay in this. So far, no fatalities, though two passengers are in serious condition.

Indiana Tech Bowling Team Bus Overturns on I-65

Doctors are evaluating a bus driver for "cardiac or possible stroke-like conditions" following the crash of an Indiana Tech bowling team tour bus Thursday morning on Interstate 65 South in Southern Indiana.

The wreck happened near the 22-mile marker, just north of Henryville, according to an Indiana State Police dispatcher. The bus, which overturned, was traveling from Terre Haute.

Anna Smith, director of the trauma and emergency center at the University of Louisville Hospital, said midday Thursday that 12 victims were taken to her hospital. Of those, 10 were in fair to good condition, with lacerations and bruises. Two were in serious condition and were being examined for a fractured pelvis, fractured wrist and possible concussion.

Smith said all patients are conscious and able to communicate, and that some were sitting up and able to contact family members. The hospital is assisting in contacting family as well. She said none of those in the crash -- four of whom were flown in on medical helicopters -- have yet been admitted to U of L Hospital.

Susan Friedrich, a spokeswoman for Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, said that as of 12:30 p.m. one student was being treated in the emergency room for minor injuries. She said the hospital was expecting four more students, although she was unsure when they would arrive.

And at Scott Memorial Hospital, located north of the crash site in Scottsburg, Ind., hospital CEO Mike Everett said 8 patients had been admitted from the crash. He said he cannot comment on their conditions.

Indiana Tech posted the following on its website: "A bus carrying 16 members of our men's and women's bowling teams and coaching staff has been involved in an accident on the way to USBC Sectional Competition in Smyrna, TN."

Motorist Rick Greed, of Fort Myers, Fla., was driving a budget rental truck just behind the bus Thursday morning. He said the bus appeared to drift into the median, where muddy tracks could seen, before veering back across highway and driving down an embankment and into a ditch.

It wasn't clear what caused the bus to veer, he said.

Greed said police arrived quickly and a handful of medical helicopters landed in succession. Ambulances also came.

"It was a bad wreck," said Kathy Campbell, another motorist who was behind Greed. "I've never seen so many helicopters landing on the interstate in my life."

Police have reopened the interstate at the Salem-Scottsburg exit at the 29-mile marker, which was shut down for hours Thursday.

Indiana State Police spokesman Carey Huls was unsure how many people were injured in the crash but does not believe anyone was killed.

Smith, of U of L Hospital, said doctors are "not certain of the symptoms that existed at the time of the crash" but that a physician determined that cardiac tests of the bus driver were necessary.

WHAS-11 reported that the branding on the bus says Excursions Trailway. The company has not yet issued a statement.

"Our hearts go out to the Hoosiers impacted by this morning's bus crash in Southern Indiana. The State of Indiana is coordinating a multi-agency response, with Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter traveling now to the area," Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said in a statement. "As law enforcement and emergency personnel respond to this situation, we urge all Hoosiers to hold these men and women in their thoughts and prayers."

I am good friends with USBC Collegiate Director Gary Brown and the folks who run McKendree University's programs. This is just about as scary as it gets. Hopefully everybody involved will be able to make a full recovery. They will all be in my thoughts!

Would they hold up Sectionals because of this, or would the team just be out of it? I don't recall something like this ever happening to know if there is any precedent.

With the Music City Clash going on with all of the weather the other week, they restructured the tournament because a good 10 teams couldn't make it in. What could they do here?
