Ball returned with deep scratches
« on: March 12, 2010, 06:58:24 PM »
Bummer, had that happen to me this morning. Threw my first ball and it took longer than usual to have it returned. Had a bad feeling and when it did return, true enough, it looked as if wolverine handled my ball at the back.

Took it to the counter and they offered to resurface it. And immediately sent the tech to have a look at the lanes. Eventually i was shifted to another lane.

Gosh, it was a terrible experience. I was a couple of weeks from buying a new ball for myself.

Anyone had similar experiences? And what did your center do to compensate?

Now my ball is with the center, they will bring it over to the pro shop to work on it and i will have to wait for their call.

what a way to start a weekend -.-

At least they offered to have it resurfaced (I'm assuming at no cost to you).  Many centers will tell you that they have no liability for damage.  If they use a Haus or equivalent refinishing machine you may like the results so well you forget about getting that new ball.  --  JohnP

yeh, I was kinda surprised that they offered to resurface the ball for me at not cost. it seems they have some sort of an agreement with the pro shop staff. They will exchange a couple of free games for their services.

I was merely trying my luck and testing their reaction. I wasnt really expecting anything. I did have a prior experience at another center and it was like u said, they have no liability. its "at your own risk" kinda thing.

Reason i posted this was to cry out a bit, as i didnt not channel my emotions to the counter staff at all as i know its not really their fault for hiring wolverine to work at the back, although the lane tech as a fair bit nochalant about it. I usually reserve fist banging as last resort instead of first option.

And i would like to see if others had similar experiences (not gloating) and how their centers handled it.

i know at our center where i work at, if our machines chew up a ball, we will resurface it for free, if there's a deep gouge, we will usually plug the gouge for them, and if the ball is not fixable, sometimes we will replace their ball.

A buddy of mine had one of his balls get stuck at AlleyKatz in westerly. It left a gash fairly deep, about 2-3 inches high and almost all the way around the ball. They offered him a new ball. I hate getting marks on my ball. Out of everything I have, one one ball has gotten a mark this season, thats my spare ball.

Its nice to know there are centers that are willing to replace a ball should such things happen.

actually does anyone know how these deep scratches come about?

logically speaking thats correct.

at the same time, i do note that many business outlets have disclaimers.

erm.. like, should your car be broken into, the car park will not be liable. or if your stuff gets stolen a a restaurant, they will not be held liable as well. list goes on.

they are pretty much in conflict with the logical argument storm mentioned. this responsibility migration seems to put us consumers at a big disadvantage.

All centers in my area will repair the ball if damaged by their equipment.  If you are a regular and the ball is beyond repair, they will usually replace the ball.  The only cost to you would be the drilling.

Same thing happened to me... TWICE! After they wrecked two balls I was livid, but I got reimbursed in experience, free practice . Helped me alot though. It has it's silver lining but my Gravity Shift and Spit Fire will never be the same.

I just about always look at it as to whether or not the bowling cntr was negligent or not/ If you told the desk or manager that balls were getting scratched and they syill say you should bowl there then it is their fault. They can have all the signs in the world up and they knew before you bowled on those lanes, they are liable.
In this guys case it was a mechinacal breakdown, but it was still the cntrs fault and they did what they should have done. I have had them try to sand it a little and say that is the best they can do. I owned a pro shop in another cntr before it closed and know what can and cannot be fixed. The last time it happened they paid me whatever a used ball was going for and let me keep the ball. In a couple of days I had fixed it to the pt that you would really have to look to see that it had been damaged.

yea, I'm always leary of the places that have the sign up that says any damage to your bowling balls isnt our fault lol...

Its like wow...

Now I've seen some balls that were damaged and for the most part, the ball was either re-surfaced, or completely replaced...

I think the first time I seen a ball get damaged in the ball return was in 2000 or 2001, and a guy threw his ball and all of a sudden you hear this loud grinding noise, and the owner goes running to the back of the lanes and comes back with the ball and a huge burn / grinded spot on it...   Luckly the owner was very down to earth and happend to be there when it happend..  And I believe he either re-surfaced the ball or replaced it..

but yea for the most part, I dont think I've seen a owner "not" try and do something...

When Red Carpet Lanes first opened in the ATL area, this place
was REALLY notorius for damaging balls.  My group had 2 get
damaged, front desk moved us to a diff pair and same thing
(2 more damaged balls)!!!

They wound up resurfacing all 4 balls at no cost and gave us
all lunch in their restaurant.

Great that they did that for us, but they really seemed to
keep Dannial Cohen busy those first few months!!!

John, you are insightful as usual. I got my ball back and apart from one tiny ding, 4 of the claw marks were gone. but whoever did the job miss a spot, and when i wipe my ball by spinning on my palm, i felt a groove, as if a particular spot was sanded down more. but im not complaining.

it was a power groove, for most part, the high gloss box finish was gone, in place is I think 4000 finish.

Tried it out on the lanes and it hooked better then ever. for a moment i was in bliss and like u said, forgot abt getting that new ball. This would be my first official experience with surface alteration.

woo.. but i cant help it, seismic made it to my country and the shop has all 4 of them.might wanna get a solaris. My wallet is going to take a beating if i lose my sense of practicality. But that''s a for a another thread.
