Favorite team bowling memories
« on: June 24, 2004, 10:29:58 AM »
Finished reading the Par Bowling: The Challenge book. The final chapter deals with the name of the game being team bowling. What are some of your favorite team bowling memories through the years? In college it would usually be the come from behind victories we would pull out within the final two frames to win a match. I also remember a game that we bowled at an Atlantic City challenge tournament my junior year over Christmas vacation break against the number two team in the nation at the time William Patterson College. We bowled our hearts out to shoot 1100 scratch- only to lose by 220 pins as they shot 1320 scratch.

Nothing anyone bowls in with the possible exception of WTC's will ever pass college bowling.  In St. Louis you get bonus pins in your well (4 total lanes).  1st place in the well gets 150 bonus pins, 2nd gets 100, and 3rd gets 50....  We were bowling with Nebraska (O'keefe, Sonnenfeld, Kretchmer, Beasley), Arizona St (Wolfe), and some other school in our well.  We shot 1302 (scratch/5 man) and came in third in the well.  OUCH.

Well, to tell you when I was bowling in college, at the time we bowled William Patterson Tommy Delutz Jr. was bowling for them and I was also bowling the ACUI nationals in Toledo, Ohio when I met Chris Barnes for the first time and he kicked butt against everyone in that tournament. I had a lot of fun at UMass Lowell from 1989 to 1993 bowling up and down the East Coast and through some parts of the mid-west. I think it opened up my game to a whole new level- and I learned more about team bowling through college than I ever could imagine in adult leagues.

You tend to remember the good times more than the bad. A couple of my best memories come from our 5 person scratch league.

Once we were bowling the dominate team in the league. This team had won the ABC team championship a couple of years earlier and others on the team had won eagles in other events as well. The first game they beat us by close to 150 pins. We came back winning the next two games and total by 100 pins. That year we ended up winning that league by two games edging out that team. My low point was the next year we lost the league championship to that same team by ½ game.

Another time we were bowling a team that brought in two touring pro’s who were back during a break in the tour. We had managed to win the first two games but they were close. The last game one of the tour players shot 300 and an 800 series and his team shot 1210, the other tour player shot a low 700. However I shot 279, our second bowler shot 289, and the team ended up shooting 1320. The other team captain who had brought in the tour players was not happy and it was great watching his reaction.
