Ball seems to be falling off my hand ???
« on: August 07, 2007, 03:13:27 PM »
It seems as though my ball is slipping out of my grip during the arm swing.  Is this most likely thumb pitch or might it be a short span?  Maybe something else might be causing this.  I actually lost the ball on the down swing and it landed on the top of my ankle.  Adding tape makes the thumb feel tighter as I put the tumb in, but it still seems as though I'm going to lose the ball during the arm swing.

Probably too much reverse pitch, since you say even if you make the thumb smaller it feels that way.  Could also be too much bevel.

Yep, too much reverse, too big, too much bevel, too round, span to short, any combination of these.  Time to find a good pro shop operator.

I had problems with dropping the ball and back about 5 years ago I started on my forward pitch journey.  I am now at 5/8 forward and 0 lateral, as of The Gathering.  The release is much cleaner and I have less tape in the thumb.

Would a slightly long span btwn fingertips and thumb hole cause knuckling?

Thank you for the feedback.  I'll check the span and the thumb pitch, correct it if its wrong and if they are correct from previuous drills, I will start with changing the pitch.

Thanks again.

Yep, you know that was a good parody when I actually had to go back and double-check who actually wrote this post.

The thumb slug slipped in this ball and I had them drill out the slug, plug it and re-drill the thumb.  I asked him to move the thumb slug to the same spot where my other bowling balls are drilled and he said he did, but I keep on losing this particular ball early.  he is an elderly guy and very defensive about his ball drilling and he said he remeasured the ball and its identical to the others.  Its my first ball out of the bag until this problem, now I don't even use it

If you are a perfectionist and hate these types of problems(I do).

I have my own span guage and also my own pitch guage.

If all of that matches...I look carefully at bevel differences.

If the ball falls off my hand...now I know everything is normal!

When it doesn't fall off my hand I bowl very well!  (Not my normal!! he he!).

Thanks again for the feedback.  I took the ball to the shop today and the pro shop oiperator first said the span was correct.  But there was another customer standing there.  I didn't say anything until the other customer left.  Then I told him my problem.  I told him if it waqsn't my span then it must be my pitch.  Then after the customer was gone, he pulled out my drill sheet and re-measured.  The span was 1/8th short.  So he plugged the thumb hole and we'll try again tomorrow.

Is complaining about an 1/8th in span difference being too picky or can others notice a long or short span if it is only an 1/8th off?

Any driller worth his salt can get within 1/32" on spans consistently.  --  JohnP
