Ball selection advice
« on: February 16, 2011, 04:24:30 AM »
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good low RG/low rev performance ball? I am a stroker with an average ball speed around 17MPH. I have a Storm Furious which works pretty well for me, plus a Columbia Complete Bedlam, and a Brunswick powergroove reactive. I'm just looking for something that will give me a little better reaction...Thanks!!

Brunswick/ anaconda is a low rg mid-priced ball that is a proven winner. good for med. to heavier volumes.

Thank you very much!! I'm fairly new to bowling, and learning more and more about equipment everyday. I appreciate your quick response. Am I correct in thinking that I need a low RG ball since I have a fairly low rev rate?

The lower the RG the more weight is distributed towards the center of the ball.  The higher the RG the more weight is distributed towards the cover.

A low RG ball will rev up faster.  This is good for bowlers who are looking for more mid-lane hold.

A high RG ball will rev up slower.  This is good for bowlers who are looking to delay the hooking action.

A bowler with low revs could benefit from a lower RG ball if his ball speed is not too slow.  However, there are so many other variables besides speed that a blanket statement like "bowlers with low revs should use low RG balls" would often be incorrect.

Locate your pap, get an estimate of revolutions per minute, find out your average ball speed, determine your axis tilt, and then factor in the type of lanes and the oil pattern on which you usually bowl.  Once you have all that information, start reading up on what kind of ball and drilling would best fit your game...or you could just consult your local pro shop operator.

Take a look at the Motiv GT1. Fantastically versatile ball.

I pretty much throw straight up board 5 and let the ball arc into the pocket, on a THS. The manager of the alley changed the oil pattern last week, and I got totally embarrassed because there was a great deal more oil than normal. I tried to make adjustments, but nothing worked for me. Does this ball perform well on heavy oil patterns? I always try to stay in the dry on the outside, but when I did this, everything I threw just slid off into the gutter. I moved inside to throw over board 10, and it pretty much stayed there. Keep in mind, I am fairly new to bowling and I still have alot to learn, so forgive me for asking so many questions.

I was watching a video on the "Reign Supreme" with Norm Duke.  He said when he throws outside near 5, he likes a ball with a bigger core..a Reign Supreme....  When he moves inside he likes the smaller core balls... It was on Youtube, but I'm sure you can find it there or on Storm's website.  Not sure if the Reign Supreme meets your specs or not, but you could look into it or use Norm's advice when looking for the ball you want.

Track505T is a great mid priced ball that handle oil well....2000ab is my preferred surface, keep in mind if the center has "taken" away the outside it doesnt matter what ball you get....it wont hook back in soup....

Ok...I apologize again for the large amount of questions here, but when you say that the core takes away from the cover, what do you mean? Are you saying that if the core is too large or dominant, or heavy, that the cover or the surface of the cover won't matter?

also, if they have just increased the oil amount, you will want a solid ball with some surface to help gain traction.....

I had my Storm Furious dulled down to hopefully accommodate the new, oily conditions. Gonna be bowling at state tournament next weekend on synthetic lanes....That should be fun for me! Haven't bowled much on synthetic...Are they naturally slicker than wood, or does it really depend on the oil either way?

In my experience synthetic lanes are slicker than wood lanes.  However, it is also my experience that they usually put less oil on synthetic lanes, thus synthetics transition faster than wood.

If you're bowling on heavier conditions and you like to throw up the five board, I'd recommend focusing on balls with more aggresive coverstocks that also have a medium to high RG.  If you like Storm, I'd recommend the Reign of Fire.

Another stupid question...Is your PAP the same no matter what ball, or does it vary with ball selection?
