Ball selection for wood lanes?
« on: August 07, 2003, 09:21:04 PM »
Do I have one that will work well, or should I step back in time for maybe a black Hammer or something?

I use the same stuff on the wood as I do on the synthetic.  I'd suggest you just relax, try what you've got, and then if you decide to buy a new ball(s) for the wood lanes you will have a greater understanding of what your personal needs for that situation will be.

resurfaced and covered a year ago.....so I am told.
Lanes are oiled every night.....unknown pattern or brand
striped every friday night and oiled saturday morning

does that answer your question?

this is going to be my first time bowling this house, and on wood lanes, stopped in yesterday to look it over, and it was like stepping back in time, above ground ball returns, old fasioned ball racks with the"u" shaped thing to catch and slow the ball into the rack, old brunswick pool tables........the lanes to me looked in very good condition, if fact I am told the folks there take great pride in thier little bowling alley.

Ed, no, I was looking for a condition, or pattern.

9- said it best......don't buy anything new, more than likely you'll be able to use something you already have unless the pattern is very short and dry.  In that case you may want to get something between your Hyde and Maxim...but until you find out.....sit tight..you'll know soon enough.

I've heard and have experience with an older wood house....18 ft synthetic and the rest wood.....carry down can get sloppier in this house. Now, does that mean all wood houses get sloppier carry down...I'm not sure....

Sit tight, you'll be fine  ..... {/font=Arial]

I was thinking the same thing, it just helps to hear it from others...
I am taking the family down tonight and roll a few games.....
I have about 4 weeks to figure it out and gain more knowledge and info about the place. Im sure the wife would have a field day with my butt if I got another ball right now.......hahahahahaha
Thanks guys

Took me a while, but I get it now...  He needs us to chime in and say "Yeah, you definitely need new equipment for those wood lanes".  Then he can show his wife what everyone is saying and possibly "persuade" her to not argue about all the new stuff he is going to buy!  Sorry I didn't catch that sooner Ed, hope we haven't ruined your chances for new gear!

Seriously, good luck - and just have fun with it!

ecajberry,

One other note. Although your description sounds like an old house, you can never tell how they will play. A great deal depends on how they oil them for your league/tournament.

Keep in mind that very rarely do lanes play in practice or open play like they do in a league or a tournament.

Since they Icon300 and the Hyde are generally fairly strong balls, do some research on a POTENTIAL resin pearl. Most do skid on dry-ish conditions.
Suggestions:
ScreamR
Power Groove Reactive
Beast Pearl
Sling Blade
Stinger Pearl
Savage Pearl
Messenger Pearl Ti
Hot Rod
Green Gargoyle

I do know they oil an hour before each league time,(Nightly Sun.-Thurs.) and Im sure it is left alone until the next night when they get oiled again. They have no leagues friday and saturdays as they keep those for open bowling only. Anyway....I will start my knowledge quest this evening.
I did find out last night that the first 15 or 20 ft are Maple, and the rest of the lanes are pine.

If you are going to be there anyway, ask questions. I would say talk to the owner, manager or head mechanic. Ask what the overlay is, what type lane machine they have and what oil and cleaner they use. All valuable information. Heck, they may even tell you the overall length of the pattern. If they are proud of what they have and want to help pursuade you to bowl there they may be very open with information. Sure can't hurt to ask and may give you and idea as to how the year will go from their personality.
