Horrible Night....
« on: October 03, 2006, 01:46:39 AM »
Wow, I couldn't hit anything last night. I just felt totally lost as to what to do to correct the problems. A guy on the team we were bowling against offered some advice/opinions. He said it appeared I was drifting on my approach. I don't recall ever having this problem. I was starting out far left and walking to center, then trying to make up for where my position was on the release. Why? I don't know, sheesh, I felt like I had to start learning everything over last night. Anyway, I've always thought it best to aim my toes at my break point. I believe most people do this. But do you then follow that path where your toes are aiming? Or do you aim them, and then try to walk straight? It seems so strange, this was part of my release I never paid much attention to until last night when the wheels fell off the wagon.

Sounds more like, Complete mental game break down. When you think constantly between frames and even during your approach, things can get pretty crazy. Do you mentally think while in your approach? If so, stop doing that. Thinking while in your approach will cause you to do all kinds of things in your game for no apparent reason. Do all your thinking between shots, once you pick up your ball your mind should auto-matically shut down in the the thinking department and your body should be on auto-pilot.

Thanks Mike, and you're absolutely right I believe. With one or two bad shots, my mind goes into overdrive trying to fix things. Just gonna put that night behind me and look forward to next week. Fireguy, no sub 100 games, but as close as I care to come.

Speaking just for myself (and about three years ago I started working on my drifting right 5-7 boards during my approach) I'm more consistant and more balanced at my release ... now I walk straight and have my shoulders squared up to my target line; I try to keep my elbow close to my side throughout my swing, projecting to a distant focal point, leading with my ring finger and using the inside of my elbow to follow through to the breakpoint. Oh ... and I also subscribe to Del Warren's recommendation to keep your head above the ball and ball swing plane throughout your approach.

 My 2 cents ...

Yo "Fluff" ... believe me, it's easier said than done if you're not used to the feel and the conception; HOWEVER, well worth the effort if ya can get it down.

BTW, Robert "Maximum Bob" Smith was the one who gave me that tip.

Well...  I don't bowl anything like Maximum Bob, but it seems like a good idea to make sure my arm is projecting out to the point down the lane where I am aiming.  I am definitely going to try it out and see how it works.

Right now I follow through the arrow I am aiming at to a point down the lane but I haven't tried using the inside of my elbow as a reference point.
