ideas of a "perfect league"
« on: March 29, 2004, 09:14:28 AM »
what do you guys and girls think would create the best league possible?...im talking about # of teams, # of bowlers on each, average restrictions, lane type and condition, league format and handicap, and money payoffs.

i know its gonna look like ive been thinking about this for awhile, but this just came to me in teh past hour or so.  if i was bowling in a money league, which i will be doing starting this fall after i leave juniors, this would be the format i would enjoy most

im just looking for opinions...im just curious to see what bowlers like. be as simplistic or as detailed as u like or feel free to tell me what u like/dislike about my idea...thanks!

for myself, i would say this:

20 teams, 4 man teams, 900 cap with team handicap being 90% of difference between team avg and 900, synthetic lanes and a typical house shot only with an out of bounds past the first arrow on both sides.  32 weeks, 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th, 30th-32nd weeks are position rounds.

21 points are at stake each week, one each for individual match games and series, along with one for each team game and series. 1 additional point goes to the team with the high scratch series.

as far as money, heres what i think should happen:

$15 per week towards prize fund=$480 total(lineage would make up rest of weekly payment)

$480x80 bowlers=$38,400 total prize fund

$500, $300, and $200 will be awarded to the 3 highest individual scratch averages, games, and series(ties will be pooled and split) that leaves $35,400

$1000 will also be split the same way among the top 3 scratch team games and series $33,400 left

$200 will be awarded to high team handicap game and series, leaving $33,000

after the 32 weeks, the top 8 teams will bowl in a playoff for an additional 3 weeks to crown a winner.  the other 12 teams will be done and receive the following team payouts:

20th $500
19    600
18    700
17    800
16    900
15   1000
14   1100
13   1200
12   1300
11   1400
10   1600
9    1900
8th thru 1st get $2000 before playoff

that leaves $4,000.

week 33 has the top 8 teams, seeded, bowling 3 games, best 2 out of 3 team handicap game wins:
#1 vs. #8
#2 vs. #7
#3 vs. #6
#4 vs. #5
all 4 losers earn extra $250 per team, leaving $3,000

week 34 has highest remaining seed bowling lowest remaining seed and the other two remaining teams bowling in the same format:
both losers earn $400 per team, leaving $2200.

week 35 has the two remaining teams bowl a best of 5 game series in the same format, with the loser taking $600 and the champion taking in $1600.

sound good to everyone???

wow sounds great, except you have the weekly NUT being about 23-25 bucks per bowler for league nite when you factor in the lineage, then add pots and brackets and guys are spending 50 bucks aweek, maybe......its too much.  most guys wont do it.  Our league has been at 12 dollars a week for about 10 years. as lineage went up prize fund went down...and what you dont address is this......anytime the money gets good, in league play, than the craziness starts....guys playing with their averages, key subs in key weeks, touring pros being used as subs, or kept on team rosters as regulars and only bowling once a month or less, you also get more complaints about the house and the shot..and so on.....big money begets bigger problems.  if you want big money stick to tournaments..

You've put a lot of thought into this - I'd say tweak it a little, such as:

1) Scratch

2) Winner take all

2nd place is for losers...............................

25+ teams

garauntee a high 1st place award

3(or 4) person co-ed team

3 games a week on 1 house shot

award money for 1st-5th
award money for high:
scratch game man&woman
handicap game man&woman
scratch series man&woman
handicap series man&woman
average man&woman
bowler of the year man&woman

have 3 weekly strike pot draws
have someone organize a third game lottery doubles (pay out 1st-3rd highest totals)

this way, you'll attract WAY MORE people to join you league...

it doesn't take an average to win in match play!

i like the ideas everyone...its just that my "perfect league" IS something ive never seen around my area.  all teh ideas you have posted are exactly what i see around the centers where i live, and  some of my friends have told me that after awhile it gets boring when they know their team is already out of contention or has locked up a certain position in teh standings.  i know some of the things i put in probabaly wouldnt be too popular with everybody, but if most of the bowlers coming in had 210+ averages i think it would make for an extremely competitive league, where every award given out would be extremely battled for.  and i dont think the money sounds that bad per week - there are plenty of leagues around here that have $14 or $15 going into the prize fund.  one thing i forgot to mention was the substitutes...all subs would bowl scratch, and none can enter the league with higher than a 220 book average.  the team handicap would be the regular team handicap minus teh handicap from the missing bowler.  thanks for your opinions!

Agreed 100%...you couldn't have put it any better than you did!!!
"Stacked" teams, whining, and other cutthroat techniques is one of the main reasons why league participation has nosedived the last 25-30 years. Some people have forgot the purpose of league bowling- to have fun with friends through friendly competition.

On the lighter side.... I wouldn't mind seeing women join more all-men's leagues!!

Hotwire, how about 780 cap for a 4-person classic? That's what we have around here, with a 170 minimum average. Of course we have only about 300 ABC-sanctioned bowlers in our association, and not too many high averages. Last season, there were 2 guys over 220, and a couple more in the 2-teens. This season, high average is is the high 2-teens, with a few more in the low 2-teens, and not a whole lot more over 200. Ah, the joys of living in the hinterlands of bowling.

drillbit, that cap sounds very low to me...probably because in staten island, our houses have nothing but THS shots down at teh two remaining centers, and one of them has leagues where 220 puts u in around 15th place on teh list(thats why i bowl on a junior tour in jersey now).  maybe 850 is more reasonable than 900, but this is all for opinions anyway.  i understand what youre saying.
