What is happening on ballreviews?
« on: November 20, 2003, 04:53:36 AM »
We seem to be having an influx of know-it-alls and many newcomers with chips on their shoulders, writing inane and self-serving comments using this set of forums in any way they feel like, depending on their mood and the status of their apparent drug intake.

Who are these people and why are they trying to destroy a good resource?

To be honest, it seems that the site content has been on a steady decline ever since Scott turned it over.  When considering the language and the personal insults that are allowed in the bowling-related forums, it's obvious that the site isn't closely monitored, if at all.  Don't get me wrong, there have been a lot of good things added to the site since its current owners have taken over, such as the buyer/seller feedback forum.  On the other hand, I as well as many other people waste more time searching through all the B.S. just to find some solid information.  Maybe on the home page there should be two separate sections: one for the latest bowling related posts and one for the latest b.s./trash talk to people you will never have to face posts.

dear hammerbowler,

yes, a 17 year old does need parental supervision, as much as most 17 year olds don't think so.  it's one of those epiphanies that we humans have around age 30.

with regard to your ability to accurately review a bowling ball, i think age is less of a consideration than experience.

you have to admit that there has recently been an influx of new users that appear to be teenagers, and they've been cluttering up the forums.  i wish they were as knowledgeable as you . . .

Lol, channel surfer, I thought you were 20 or 30-something for the longest time.  That's a good thing!  The whole teenage illusion is that they think they're invincible.  It's all about selfishness, and the rest of it.  Then comes a day when you look at a teenager and your first thought is, "What an idiot," followed by the realization that you used to act just like that.  It's humbling and irritating all at the same time.  Ever hear your parents say, "I hope you have kids just like you," and you think 'hey, I'm not that bad, couldn't be too hard.'  YEAH RIGHT.  I was one of the more manageable teenagers, but geez I still did some DUMB stuff.  I still do dumb stuff every now and again.  Who doesn't, but life is rough for about a decade.  Hopefully I'm getting to the end of that decade.  Plus I'm sick of people walking in the shop and asking for my boss, and then doing the whole "Oh . . " thing when I tell them he's not there.  They think I'm just another worthless teenager that is there because I have nothing better to do.  He covered for me for a while though, he'd be the guy out front, and people would leave stuff and just assume he was going to drill it.  Then when they'd tell him good job, he'd tell them to say it to me, yada yada yada, it's getting better.

It's mostly kids no doubt, not all, but mostly,...it's also mostly on the non-bowling related board, but the infintile stuff is spewing into bowling boards, and it's getting ridiculous.

King, on a scale of 1 to 10 with a 1 hardley being a Teenager and 10 being definitely a Teenager, I will have to give you a "1". You are definitely very mature, smart, and witty for your age. Sometimes I think you are "pulling out leg" saying you are only 13 because there are adults on this site that don't do as well as you do. "Don't change. You do really well."

I'm guilty of being a teenager. Sometimes I have to rewrite some of my posts in fear of them being taken the wrong way.(as if the're ever taken the right way to begin with. Anyway...)

But compared to half the stuff I see on this site, I'm not the worst.

I think that most of the teens posting here are not a problem.  There are a few posters lately that are a problem but is there any proof that they are indeed teens?

I don`t think that anyone on this site is intentionally signaling out the under 21 group who frequent this site. We all learn from each other, no matter what the age and the few that play mind games makes it tough for everyone.

In my view the purpose of this site is to exchange ideas, information and opinions that are bowling related. This is a game that we all enjoy and some even love. To deminish the powerful knowledge, freely given by probably some of the best bowlers in this country, by using this site as a childs play toy is unacceptable. So please, accept that freely given knowledge with a nod, a smile and a thank you.

Well thats all from this old guy. Think i`ll go eat some cottage cheese and pineapple before I hit the hay.

Folks,

I was not singling out the teenagers. SOme people are "teenagers" and will remain that way no matter how old they get. Others are more mature AND can be funny and humorous without being childish, although much of a human being's does go back to immature points of view.

No one, I am sure, least of all I, am against humor and pulling another's leg, even in print, where sometimes sarcasm and irony are hard to express in an easy to interpret manner. Even a little dig or jib against another's point of view can be taken, accepted by most people. When it gets nasty, when comments get personal and low down insulting, then it's time to stop and/or aoplogize.

We're here to share points of view, experiences, knowledge on bowling and balls and all equipment. We MUST understand that what works for one person may not work for another. It can, if we provide all the factors involved in whatever we do.

Please also remember that there are always newbies, who are genuinely interested in learning all ballreviews and its "inmates" have to offer. They MAY have learned some things that are wrong. Don't be nasty and hasty with them, until we learn why they say what they did.

I am locking this bevause it seems to have strayed into becoming an attack on teenagers and that is not appropriate. In fact it is not what I intended.
