Title: Ball speed on the heads vs. Ball speed at/near pin deck.
Post by: Rantings on January 05, 2007, 05:38:07 AM: I assume that the ball speed will be less toward the backend than during the time on the heads. Is there a way to determine ball speed at the heads from qubica bowling systems that are installed on certain lanes in our area? Or is there too many factors involved?

Post by: shelley on January 05, 2007, 01:59:50 PM: I've heard 2mph difference as a rule of thumb. But it depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is how they actually measure your speed at the deck.

Post by: Re-Evolution on January 05, 2007, 02:10:14 PM: The only way that they could record your speed in the heads would be if they had the ball sensors placed there. The problem with this is the sensors that are used to get the speed are also the sensors that activate the pinsetter to cycle and the camera to send data to the scoring computer. If the sensors are placed up front you have to lengthen the trigger delay to keep the sweep from coming down too early when a ball is thrown slowly. The other side of this is the sweep will come down too slow when a ball is thrown fast and pins will end up in front of the sweep too often causing a game delay while a lane attendent removes the dead wood from the lane/gutter.

If I am not mistaken the ball slows down as it goes down the lane.

Post by: LuckyLefty on January 05, 2007, 02:27:23 PM: Depends on the bowler...how much of the time his ball stays in the oil...how high a track he has(the higher it is assumed more friction I believe), how many revs(in relation to speed).

I have seen differences it seems averaging more like closer to 3 for many of the people whose printouts I saw at Kegel.

For myself a rev dominate player with a very high track...I had many readings of 3 mph difference and a couple of shots that really got in the friction that had almost 5 mph of difference(still came back and got the pocket).

Greater differences as above are better for heavy oil and carrydown. Smaller differences are often real sweet on fresh shots!

Post by: JohnP on January 05, 2007, 03:41:17 PM: You could try timing the ball from the foul line to the arrows, 15' and comparing the resultant calculated speed to what Qubica says. I'm not sure if a stopwatch will get an accurate enough measurement for that short an elapsed time. -- JohnP

I check to see how many frames between release and the arrows.
Here is the formula to find it with video.
fps/frames = x
x / 10.225 = mph
example:
frames 15, frames/sec 30 (standard digital video)
30 / 15 = .5
.5 / 10.225 = 20.45mph

The 10.225 comes from dividing 40.91 by 4 since you are only covering 1/4 of the lane and 40.91 is used if you are using the entire lane. You can also just multiply the frames by 4 and then use the 40.91.

Post by: backswing_aplenty on January 05, 2007, 09:13:27 PM: Qubica seems slower bacause the readings are at 50 feet, and do double duty as the sensors that trigger the timing for the rake and table drives. At 50' the ball is going or is in it's roll phase after hooking. For a ball to hook it needs to find friction, when a ball finds friction it slows down. Very rarely will a ball remain constant or speed up at the breakpoint.
