Ball Spinner
« on: May 10, 2005, 04:31:47 AM »
BR people,

I am thinking of buying a ball spinner and I have a three part question:

a)  Does anyone out there have one and use it regularly?

b)  What would be the benefits of owning one?

c)  What are the most practical applications of owning one?

Thanks,
Chris

a)  I have had my Donkee spinner for almost 3 years now and use it twice a week.

b)  A spinner makes cleaning, sanding, and polishing a breeze.  I also believe that cleaning your ball on a spinner gets more grime off of a ball than if you just do it by hand.

c)  Not sure what you mean by "practical applications" but I have the Donkee 3/4 HP dual speed personal spinner.  http://www.donkee.com/spinner.htm

However, if it hadn't been a gift and I had to buy one out of my own pocket I would have gone with the Innovative Pro-2sp spinner.  http://www.innovativebowling.com/cppage1.htm

baccala8872,

I have a Vertex ball spinner.  I use mine fairly often.  It makes polishing a lot easier.  I especially like the convenience of being able to resurface my bowling balls on my own time, without having to truck my entire arsenal to the proshop.  My principle reason for getting one was that I was tired of using my centers broken polisher......and I had it when it ate my quarters!!!  I use this site for advice on improving my resurfacing and polishing techniques.

Any particular reason you would take the 2sp over the Donkee?

2sp does 400/600 and donkee is 580/800 - is there a preference as far as speed goes?
Donkee is a little cheaper and has the optional foot pedal and splash guard.

I don't have one, but I've been thinking about getting one.  Just not sure what I should be looking for, or what makes 1 better than another.

Has anybody had any success making one?  They don't look too difficult - just a motor and a bucket for holding the ball.  Mount the motor and probably some sort of gear - I'm not mechanically inclined, but the design looks pretty simple.

Buy one, getting the gearing correct, the bearings right, true, just spend the money and buy a good one and you'll never regret it.
I have one form Innovative, a bit more in cost, but I got a deal . The other brands mentioned as just as good as the others, find the best price you can and buy it.

I made my own, it was not very hard but I am a mechanically inclined person. Even though mine works, it does not do as well as a professionally made one. Getting these things in balance with a 15 lb ball (with an off center weight block none the less) is nearly impossible without a lathe. If I had to do it over again, I would just buy one.

I have an Innovative spinner that I picked up second-hand from an old man who only used it on Sundays (but don't tell him that).

The biggest advantages to owning one's own spinner are the ability to quickly and easily experiment with a variety of surface preparations, and the freedom of being able to make surface changes without being at the mercy of the hours (or availability) of the local pro shop.
