I would like to build a storage rack to hold my bowling balls that are not currently in use but I still want to hold on to. Does anyone have any building plans for this kind of project?
-
PBA is correct....if you look on eBay, there are some listed from ebonite time to time...and they're not too expensive...however they might be boring looking.

I got myself a 6' tall rack from IKEA (I think they are also present in the US?) for my bowling balls.
Sturdy solution in maple and silver (fits my kitchen, the only room with concrete floor in my flat), and quite cheap (or reasonabyl priced): I paid about $80 for a 15+ balls storage space which even looks good.
Ball holders are drain tube end caps, btw, about 80 cents a piece from a DIY market.
I think that a trip to a DIY market might yield an even cheaper solution, it really depends on the space you have at hand and if the rack is just to hold the balls or if it has to fit into the rest of the furnishing (as in my case)?

I would like to see the one you got from IKEA. Do you have a link? I saw a really good one at Strikz in Frisco Texas. It was made of PVC pipes. I bought one from someone that came out of an old center. It is a 6" long Brunswick and has 3 levels. Cost was around $50. Worth every cent.

i've built severa; using 1x3's and 1x6's. I use the 1x6's for end pieces and the 1x3's to connect them. i can send pics if you get me an email adress

Those are real simple to build. I don't trust any furniture coming from Ikea!!
Sorry....just personal bad experiences.
I've built two, 4-level racks which hold twenty balls apiece. Only cost me about $25 per rack, using 1x3's and 6.5 inch, to 7 inch cross pieces. I added 2x4's to the 1x3' at the base of each to give it more bottom weight and stability.
Be sure and space your cross-pieces wide enuff to accomodate each balls diameter. Used regular nails for tacking and power screws for strength connections.

I've always just used bookcases. They're cheap and sturdy enough to do the job. The one's in the picture cost $29 a piece.

Hi Smash49,
the rack I used looks quite similar like the one in the link.

In fact, it is made up from a rack/book shelf system and can be individualized and enlarged if necessary.
I can put 3 balls per shelf (even more when in 2 rows), and the shelf holds 6 boards for a total of 18. You also get elemenst with sides and doors for more storage space.

If you are cheap, like me, go to Target, K Mart, Wal Mart garden center. Ask for the displays that flower bulbs come in on. They are 3 or 4 shelf racks. They throw them out after the bulbs sell. Disassemble one to add boards on the shelf to make a toy/book rack for the kids (grandkids in my case) or take one board out of each shelf to make a good ball rack.
I have 6 total, 3 ball racks, one for the spinner, one storage for rags etc last for books. I also have 5 for the grandkids toys/books. One thing, they are not totally smooth, so sanding/painting is a good idea. They stand 5 ft tall, I cut them down to 3 shelves, used eatra boards on book racks, painted/stained them and they work great...
toys/books in one area..$0
balls out for display...$0
even the wife allowed one in the livingroom...priceless!
I had the paint/stain, so total cost to me, gas to go to the store to pick them up....just a suggestion. BTW, the stores throw them out when they are done so most ( all here) will let you have them if you go pick them up when they sell out of the bulbs. The distributors send them with the bulbs on them so it's not a store rack thing. Worth checking out.
Three shelf unit holds 10 balls per shelf (put a brace in the middle of each shelf) and I made 3 shelves per rack.
.sorry, can't type early mornings...need more coffee........

Rowdy,
That looks like something I was thinking of. I am finishing my basement and have some scrap 2x4's laying around that should work. I see some kind of black mark's under the balls on the racks. Did you make some kind of cutout to keep the balls from rolling?
Thanks
-
I bought a rolll of velcro tape - I applied the "fuzzy" side to the rack itself to make small grip points to keep the bals from shifting. You will have no problem making the rack - I am very mechanically challenged and it was not difficult - The key to my rack was just making sure the frames are very level, or you can get some shifting of the balls. Good Luck!!

I put this together this weekend:
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/qstick777/album/576460762351530136/photo/294928803773852831/5
3/4" plywood for the sides,
1x4" ripped in half and notched out for holding the rails.
2x3" for the bottom bracing, and I added two more pieces to brace, just under the top rails.
1 1/2" and 1 1/4" wood poles for the rails.
I figure I have about $80 in materials, mainly because I bought the pre-cut 3/4" plywood (in 24x48" sections). A light sanding around the whole thing to avoid splinters.
Slapped a coat of black semi-gloss paint on it Sunday, and 3 coats of spray on laquer (another $10).
I will make some changes to the next one I build - I need some storage for my shoes, towels, cleaners, etc. All in all, it was fun to build and I don't think it looks bad for something I put together in a few hours. I still might cut some handles on the top to make it a little easier to move.

I made mine out of 2x8 lumber and 2.5" multi-use screws. Pretty cheap.
I used a drum sander on a drill to make dimples where the balls rest to keep them evenly spaced. Worst part is...now I need to make a second one!

I got two of the Ebonite ones off eBay for $40/apiece. Shipped they were less than $60. They hold 24 balls between the two of them. Some assembly required, but if you have an electric Phillips head screwdriver you can build both in just over an hour with no fuss or mess.
The only negative to the Ebonite kit is the wood is unstained and fairly rough-hewn. If I was going to make a real presentation out of it I probably would have prepped it. But we're trying to sell our house and all I wanted them for was to get the balls off the carpet in our spare bedroom.
From a functionality standpoint, they're good.
