Plastic only: week 1 results
« on: December 07, 2004, 07:45:15 AM »
Hey everyone,

Some of you may remember that I was tinkering with the idea of using nothing but my plastic ball for my Sunday night mixed league as a means of becoming more accurate and growing accustomed to going straight at spares. Well, this past Sunday I did just that. Here were the results: 220, 148, 201. Yeah, I'm the king of consistency. To be honest, I threw the ball pretty well all night long, including the lowly 148. The only difference was in that game I simply could not strike. I was adjusting 1/4 boards trying to find a line, but I just never found one. I also missed my only easy spare of the night (10-pin) during that game. Nevertheless, although it was very difficult, I found the experience to be a lot of fun. I knew that I earned the strikes that I got. On another note, I really enjoyed the exercise of shooting all of my spares dead straight. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I did so in my men's league last night. I only had 2 opens all night long (greek church, chopped the 10 off of the 6) and I won both the forward and reverse of the clean pot while shooting 678. Sure, nothing to write home about, but at least I didn't throw pins away the way that I have been doing.  Anyhow, I'm going to stick with the plastic-only plan on Sunday's, and I would recommend this as a suggestion to anyone who wants to practice on tougher patterns that can't find them in their area. Thanks to all of you that chimed in and helped me decide to try this. I'll keep you posted as things go on.

if a house has toasty enough backends, its not extremely difficult to score decent with plastic. I averaged 205 for a summer league bowling with plastic over 4th arrow (they refuse to oil in the summer).

I often end up using plastic for the 3rd game in one of my leagues.  It's old wood in bad shape and the heads burn up really fast.  I usually have to play a small swing shot hitting somewhere between 15 and 20 at the arrows to get a decent reaction.

The biggest differnce that I see throwing plastic is that it doesn't cover up your release errors.  Miss the release and miss the headpin.  Not so with stronger balls.

Hi
Bob after reading your post
I going to try it next week.
all I got is a old red phantom
it still fits there is a out of bounds
so if I get it out by by not like the
hook monsters that get you by.
I will come back with scores.

All this talk of a sraight ball makes me want to get out my Raiders Viz A Ball and shoot some practice games to see if that helps my focus and accuracy.

I'm in a slump right now and this might help with getting out. Thanks for the post, it opened my eyes!
