Changes in association championship
« on: September 13, 2007, 05:41:51 AM »
Our local association championship is coming up next month.

I have bowled in it every year since I moved here (1980) and will bowl in the all the events (team, doubles and singles) again.

However they have made a change this year I’m not too keen on.

They are allowing multiple entries in team (as they have in the past, no more than 3 members the same), doubles (new) and SINGLES (new). Plus entries are allowed until the last squad has started.

Your only limitation on doubles and singles is the number of squads available and that you have to have a new partner for each doubles event.

Part of this kind of a tournament is that you show up with your equipment and get one crack at it.

Now you can bowl a squad, punch up a new ball, get another partner and try again.

A lot of tournaments are like that.  Usually you have to take your AE scores from the first set of teams, doubles, and singles that you bowl, or if you're signed up from the start multiple times you have to designate which will be counted towards AE.  We used to take two teams to a tournament but there was usually one guy who would have to bowl both to fill it out.  He had to designate which team event would be used for AE.

Also, you're usually only allowed to cash once per event, so it's not like someone could flood singles with his own entries and take four out of the top five places.

It's a gamble.  You gotta pay extra to do it and you might not bowl well enough to make all your money back if you bowl a lot of squads.

we do team re-entries, but not doubles and singles, we talked about allowing doubles but only on the last day of the tourney and only as space allowed, but it has never materialized

I just called the association office.

No limitation on cashing in a event other than all events (1st 3 scores).

So a person could be 1st, 5th, and 10th in singles.

A lot of associations are doing this now, to try to get more entries.

Heck, last time I checked, our association tournament had been reduced to one team squad, and two squads of singles/doubles, and none of the squads filled.

In my opinion, allowing reentries into a championship tournament turns
it into a "bowl till you win" event rather than a true championship tournament.

Our association allows multiple teams with change of 2 members, but Dbls & singles once. High score in team counts for all-events. The tournaments I run have multiple team and doubles with high counting on A-E. One of the main reasons I went to multiple for team and doubles for my tournaments was finding subs fast. On single entry there were times teams or a bowler got stuck when an emergency cost them a bowler. The second reason is increased entries as mentioned by others.

I am waiting on someone to complain on our association tournament though. We put together 3 teams out of our group that bowl travel league, sweepers and tournaments last year. All three were in division 1 (200+ averages) and we took 3 of the 9 paid spots including 1st and 2nd. We also won state division 1 and a local tournament (sorry had to brag, doesn't happen to often. Team name is SLAM and at state we did "Strike Like a Machine".)
