Ball tracking over thumb hole
« on: February 28, 2013, 12:19:17 PM »
.In an attempt to get more of an aggressive look on more oil I changed the surface of a couple of ball. I have noticed though that as I am doing this my ball is tracking directly over the thumb. I vary releases and speed but it still happens. It was on one ball now there are two. I had never had this problem before so I am wondering if it could be the added surface not allowing the ball to spin or is it something I am doing.

if anyone is interested the problem seemed to come from my finger grips being to tight. went to a larger size no more lope.

From my experience, the more aggressive the ball or layout, the closer the track gets to the gripping holes. Couple that with a low tilt, which makes the track cover more of the ball, can make the track clip the holes. You said you went with bigger finger holes. Tight grips may have been making you come out of the ball differently. Without watching you throw a ball, we're pissing in the wind.

I really am a bad bowler. I do so many bad things and have so little true important knowledge about the game that its embarrassing.
Ball fit is one of those things that I don't understand. Angles, pitch,  span, not withstanding, I don't know what good fit is. Should it feel tight on the fingers should it be loose or comfortable versus effective. All that said I have been fiddling with fit loosing and gaining weight its hard to maintain a constant.
My wife, not a, "bowler", was trying to find me a gift and she came across these thumb socks. Once I got used to them,  its harder to hold the ball, another issue,I realized that because I was hanging in the thumb, not properly clearing the ball I was tracking over the thumb. With the sock I clear and no track without sock I hang and track over the thumb shot after shot. And because I had to tighten my thumb to control the ball I have learned the thumb should be tight. A tighter thumb also makes it harder to squeeze the ball. Wow thanks to my wife, who again shows she is smarter than I even in an area she isn't involved in.

Toomanytenpins,

Most thumbs are not round, but oval, so the thumbhole should match.

Have you seen this article about thumbholes?
