Ball weight.
« on: November 27, 2004, 11:48:48 AM »
I hear the debate between 14, 15 and 16lb balls but is there a huge difference between 12 and 14lb balls.  My girl uses a 12 but I am trying to get her to move up to a 14.  It appears that her 12 doesn't drive through the pins and deflects alot... leaving nasty splits.

She is using a 12lb Storm Razor Wire so it is a reactive ball so she is using the right type of ball.  Maybe it is just me but it just appears that her ball deflects off of the pins.  I try having her throw a heavier house ball and see how she feels about that.  Thanks for the input.

If her ball speed is very high with 12lb, then go to 14lb. If not, move up to 13lb first. If she can last 3-4 games with 13lbs no problem, then 14lb could be the answer in the future. My wife has an old 12lb Gyro that she throws about 17mph down the middle. I am drilling her a 14lb tornado this week, cause she leaves more 5 pins than anybody due to deflection. This will also slow her ball speed down and get a little more consistency in her swing instead of just throwing it down the middle.

jaf1224-

FYI - The only Storm balls that have a dynamic core down to 12 pounds are those in their Master Line.  All the others do not which explains why your wife's Razor Wire is not performing as well as she would like.

Moving up two pounds is a major jump for a lot of women.  I myself can only throw 13 pounds.  I tried 14 and experienced shoulder pain.

Have your wife try the following test:

Have her put her elbow next to side with her palm facing up.  Place the 14 pound ball in her hand.  If she can hold it comfortably for say 10 seconds then it probably will not be too heavy.  If it drags her down then chances are it's going to be too much ball for her.  Then try it with 13, etc.

Obviously if she can handle 14 pounds, that's the way to go.  If not then go with a 13 if possible.

If she goes with 13 pounds try the following companies:

Brunswick
Storm - Master Line only
Morich
Hammer
Dyno-Thane

The above companies still use the same core design in their 13 pound equipment.  All others do not.

In addition, Ebonite seems to perform well in their lighter weight.  I believe they use the V-2 core in some of them.

Hope this helps.
