Heavy oil ball help
« on: September 24, 2009, 12:54:30 AM »
Over the past few years i have had trouble with heavy oil balls hooking. (LevRg, Buzzbomb, Total Inferno to name a few) And haven't really had success with one since the total annihilation. My problem is they roll heavy but have no recovery on the backend of the lane. Therefore I will usually slow my speed and tighten my line with a med piece say a storm thunderstruck or nomad pearl (by the way thats is an awesome ball). My question to you is what ball would you recommend  and a layout recommendation. I've tried a many different surfaces all the way up to 4000. my specs are as follows

PAP: 4 1/8 right
            1/4 up
high tilt, Rev dominant

also what effect does purchasing a ball with longer pin have on reaction?

Approach the game with no preset agendas and you''ll probably come away surprised at your overall efforts.

Bounty Hunter 6x5. Maybe a dual angle possibly 50x4x30. Can't say for sure with out seeing you bowl.

Machine, from those first three balls you mentioned, it sounds like you should go with a Storm ball for your next oiler... All of the balls you stated have rolly characteristics, so its no surprise you dont get that desired look. I too, have this problem at times on the longer patterns.

The layouts you should try on the next ball should be pin up. Get the pin from you axis, say about 5 inches, and then work on surface. Many people make the mistake by placing the pun under the fingers. With todays high flaring bowling balls, this would be going against you. A pin down drilling tends to have the same energy throughout the whole lane, but a pin up has the nature of skidding more and reving up in the backend.

I would suggest a long pin, but I would suggest just getting the pin above ur fingers. One inch, or perhaps even a couple inches above should do the trick. This drilling would require a reasonable long pin but it dont have to be 5-6". If you have your eye on a next ball, then I would maybe try either a Virtual Gravity or a Furious. Both of those balls have that Natural Length with a big move off the spot. Hope this helps, John
