Only thing I can think is that the rack was hit reeeeeally slow.  I've seen leaves like that by little kids barely getting the ball to the pins.

Well, I found the solution, its the most amazing thing I've ever heard.

He actually left the 4-6-7-9-10... but as he went high, he actually hit one of the middle pins straight up into the rack in the position of the 8 pin. The rack picked up the 4-6-7-9-10, already having an "8 pin", and then laid down the split. The machine registered a 4 count with a circle around it.

I had one of my bantam bowlers leave this using a 6 pound ball.  We have an "instant replay" so I was able to see the pins fall.  The ball was hooking hard right to left and hit the 1 and 2 pins then it went in front of the 4 pin into the gutter.  The 2 pin fell into the 5 pin and the 1 pin fell into the 3 pin, leaving the Greek church plus one.

Yeah, well this wasn't done by a little kid with a 6lb ball lol, it was done by a grown man, who averages about 230 and holds a PBA Card.

Never left it, but I have a name for it: The I'm Leaving The Bowling Center Immediately split.

Funny things happen in bowling sometimes. One of my former drillers swore on his grave he was shooting the 6-10 one night, hit the six on the lefthand side, and the pins stood but the ball deflected and kept going. He got 8- for the frame. And he had four witnesses who backed him up. He was using a 16-pound Vector One (this was back in the urethane days).

After discussing it, what everyone feels probably happened was he hit the 6 fairly light (but with a lot of speed), and it deflected into the sideboard and came right back to where it was, standing up. It all just happened so fast that it looked like the ball "deflected" off the pin.

That's funny...was he throwing a 6 pound ball?   J/K!

I took a second look at the picture you provided and the 8 pin is off spot to the left, so in theory the ball could have passed between the 9 pin and the 8 pin without hitting them. Or the ball may have moved the 8 pin off spot without knocking it over, if the ball was hooking very late and very hard.

speaking of picking the 6-9 off. Great story lol. I was practicing on the Shark Pattern, and I happened to just throw an awful shot, and missed way way way way right, taking the 6-9 out of the full rack. Now, being that it was just practice, I told the people I was bowling with I was going to throw the exact same shot, and put it right in between the hole, and did. I don't think I will ever repeat something like that.

A crazy leave for a guy who shot 300 five days before and is a great bowler.
