Ball/rules question......
« on: December 29, 2009, 11:39:11 AM »
Not about me. And what happened,to me,wasn't a big deal.
A friend is very meticulous about ball maintenance. While bowling, his strike ball came back with belt marks on it. Alcohol didn't remove them. They were in his track area.
He hand rubbed his ball with an Abralon pad in his bag to remove the belt marks. It was the same grit as the OOB finish that the ball came with when new.
He is a legit 220 bowler--not a house bowler. In my mind there was no cheating. I did not say anything. The complaint was brought up by someone he was bowling against.
Does this break the rule of sanding/surface change during competition??? League only--not a tournament.

I believe it is still illegal to do so.  Even though it may be "just a league", it occurred during a time when scores are counted-making it a competition.

Any serious bowler (ave. 190+) should know that is illegal even with the same grit as the ball currently is. I personally wouldn't have had an issue with it.

Yes, it's illegal, but there are cleaners that can be used during sanctioned competition legally to take belt marks off.  --  JohnP

Illegal to alter surface after league play starts, yes. Should have asked opposing team captain if he could do it. Personally I would've said OK but by rules that ball is done for the night.

Can't use ammonia. It's on the banned list from usbc.

 But, did he alter it?

What if the surface was already at the grit of the pad he was using? If the ball was already at 1000 abralon, and you use a 1000 abralon pad to clean it, was the surface altered?

I wonder if this was the case (don't know), it was just something I thought about and wanted to see what everyone thought.

I guess what I'm asking is, what constitutes "altering" the surface?

You can not use any type of abrasive on the ball once your certified league or tournament starts.  That includes sanding paper and polishes that contains abrasives.

I'm pretty sure once you throw a ball 1 time, it is no longer in the OOB (or whatever surface you have it at).  Now, the different might be OOB=1000 and after you throw the ball for a game it's 997, but that's still different.  If you never change the surface by hand, every ball eventually gets to 600.

Rules are clear, abrasives cannot be used once sanctioned play has started.

Yes he did alter the surface as this spot was freshly sanded, be it may by he same grit or not.  Oil and other residues get on the ball while bowling, so even lightly hand scuffing it freshens the surface of the ball that is scuffed.
Not to mention I also believe the rules state that if the surface is altered you must alter the entire surface of the ball and not just a specific area such as the bow tie or your track.

I believe the rule is that he has to take that ball out of play and any delivery made with that ball results in a zero score.

On a side note.. I know you can't alter the surface with any abrasive pad but it seems like this rule is more to do with making a ball duller during competition.  I think it is funny that the USBC says its completely legal to take a sanded ball and put it in the luster king polishing machine during league play. That definitely alters the surface but it is deemed legal by the USBC.  I spoke with them about this and they said it is strictly a monetary issue where the bowling proprietors made a hoopla about it cutting into their revenue if they banned it.   There are also other products like Secret Sauce ball polish from Beans, Storm's reacta shine, super shine, xtra shine, and moon shine.  I would say these products definitely alter the surface in some way.  I'm just not sure what falls into the illegal category of the USBC's definition of "altering surface"

this is why i ALWAYS keep some waterd down acetone in one of those storm bowling pin bottles(mega bite reacta clean etc etc)  makes belt marking disappear in seconds!!!
