Ball/rules question......

Not about me. And what happened,to me,wasn't a big deal.
 A friend is very meticulous about ball maintenance. While bowling,his strike ball came back with belt marks on it. Alcohol didn't remove them. They were in his track area.
 He hand rubbed his ball with an Abralon pad in his bag to remove the belt marks. It was the same grit as the OOB finish that the ball came with when new.
 He is a legit 220 bowler--not a house bowler. In my mind there was no cheating. I did not say anything. The complaint was brought up by someone he was bowling against.
 Does this break the rule of sanding/surface change during competition??? League only--not a tournament.

My bad. I was going off memory. I was thinking acetone not ammonia.

USBC rules may be dumb and not make any sense, but they're still the rules we play by.  For example, Joe Bowler can use cleaner XYZ at any time during competition, but he can't bring his ball to my shop and let me apply it for him on my spinner.  --  JohnP

I understand, but I feel you shouldn't be able to put anything on the ball at all during competition... I know this is how it was back in the early to mid 90's.. I took about 5 years off from bowling and when I came back I was surprised that you could use alcohol and cleaners on the ball during competition... So basically you can get away with surface changes, just come with all your equipment sanded and then use a polish or the lusterking to shine it up if it is too dull and hooking too much..
