Tardy Bowlers..Go Figure
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:07:27 AM »
A post from another site had me thinking, why is it that when bowlers show up late on league night (either  just after practice or just in time for the end of the last frame by which the league rules allow), they're out of the gate stringing 5-6 strikes? Meanwhile I'm there early, do well in practice, then league starts and what I found in practice is gone.  Now, I'm talking about a THS, not tournament or pbax leagues, where it's a must to throw practice shots. I'm sure some of you have witnessed this..  Do you practice through the entire session, or just loosen up some and sit down? I may just try skipping practice and see what happens.

I am an emergency sub on my brothers team on Monday's. League starts at 7 and I don't get off till 7. I have bowled 5 times this year and except for the first week I have thrown the first strike and at least 2 of the first 3 the other 4 weeks. Don't know what it is but I have to assume that I am not thinking yet and once my brain catches up I stop striking.

I have a guy on my team who always misses practice, and starts striking out of the gate. It frosts my butt every time lol.

I also have someone like that on my team, Needs no practice asks me how the lanes are, then starts striking.. carries 210 average. This guy when he bowls is smooth as silk..

When I was younger, I didn't need to practice. I knew how to throw the ball and how to read the reaction off other players. I could pretty much start striking from the outset.

Then, somewhere along the line, I got old.

Nowadays, I need to throw some practice balls. Not so much to figure out a line as it is to get loosened up and stretched out so that I can actually throw the ball properly. That first couple of shots actually hurts sometimes.

I've seen it before but I have a firm believe that no matter how old/young you are you need to loosen up.  I stretch before I work out and before I bowl.  For me it's different though because I'm in the business and would like to be for a long time without injury.  Hell my first santioned 300 was with no practice so I guess I can see it both ways.

yea, I'm one of those guys, who've always needed plenty of warm up throws to get loose......   but yea those first 2 throws tend to hurt, when i am warming up...    But usually by the 4th throw, I'm good.... everything after that is just a bonus...

I always hated going to a tournament, and you were only allowed 1 shot on each lane.... its like wtf..... give me atleast 5mins of warm up time.

My first 300 game I shot back in 2003 was in a Saturday morning Youth League that I almost missed. If it had not been for my friend calling me to ask if I were coming to league, it would have never happened.

Started out with the first 3...then the strikes started coming, and I remember going back to the table and laying my head down being so tired from the night before...after I threw the 10th one, that is when I woke up in an instant realizing that I was just two away.

It was definitely a great feeling with an unusual set of circumstances. I thank my friend every now and then for that phone call!

God Bless You All!

The minutes before league are warm-ups...  practice comes at a time other than competition...  So those missing the first "precious" minutes before league are merely just missing out on some warm up time which can be made up outside the lanes by stretching, etc...
