How much has the game changed?
« on: May 05, 2012, 11:35:12 PM »
Hey guys. I need some help. After a 4 year absence, I'm finally going to be able to bowl in a league again. Summer Trio league to be exact. The question I have is how much if any has the lane oil composition changed in the last 4 to 5 years? I know ball technology has gone nuts, which makes me wonder if the oil has undergone any changes. I haven't got to bowl much in the last 4 years up until the start of this year. Just want to know what to expect. I bowl in an old wood house that needs some upgrading so I'm also wondering if the oil has changed, what are the odds that the house shot has changed too. As far as I know, I'll be on about a 38' to 40' THS for this league. I heard last summer was a Sport shot though. I'll find out a week from Monday. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On wood lanes you won't notice much of a change in recent years. There's only so much you can do with them.  Just know that all your old equipment will probably still work well, especially with polish.

I bowled a league this year at a house with the first 20 feet synthetic and the remainder wood. I had to use the weakest equipment I own nearly all the time, and even had several good games hooking my spare ball. Wood lanes are "soft" and today's reactive covers respond pretty fast. Best of luck as you return to the sport.

Hey man, thanks for the tip. I have noticed that my Anarchy gets pretty jumpy on those wood lanes, while my Domination and Triple X-Factor are bit more predictable. I recall my Ace and Deuce also being a bit easier to read on these lanes. I've pretty well determined that the Anarchy will only see about the first game of the set and then go back in the bag. Thanks again for the input.

The solids and stronger covers will tame the backend down, but in exchange for earlier roll. Sometimes this makes them hit a little dead. Don't be afraid to use a polished pearl like the Anarchy but keep following the shot inward. As long as you get adequate skid you can really open up the lane and your angles.

Do have something weak in your bag. The so-called "weak" balls can perform great and carry well when there is lots of friction.

I have some friends that moved to an area that has old wood lanes. They are not able to use any of their newer equipment that much. They were looking for the old Blue Hammers and stuff like that. Don't know if that will help or not.
I am also looking at getting back involved in the sport after being out for a few years. I am lost looking at stuff right now. I will have to really look at things of what to get if I get back involved. Good luck!

The weakest ball I have is either my Triple X-Factor or my 2Fast. Depends on what you consider weak I guess. The Triple X-Factor is drilled pin up so length isn't an issue as that ball was pretty smooth rolling for me. Regarding the solid coverstocks, I just got rid of my X-Factor Deuce. The ball got to be just too much on the backend on the shot I was seeing. Come to find out that the oil machine they were using wasn't putting out the oil the right way, thus leaving a very inconsistent shot. The Deuce more times than not after one game or so was just jumping off the dry and even though it was hitting hard it wasn't driving through the back of the deck like I needed it too. It wasn't so much the ball as it was the shot but had I known this at the time I'd kept the Deuce. No worries. I still have a Triple Xtreme at my disposal, undrilled. Thanks again guys for all the help.

Lanes and oils haven't really changed that much in 4 years.  What I have seen however is the cores and shells have both gotten stronger to the point that they don't match up that well for a lot of players on the patterns we see.  Examples are Nano, and Nano pearl, and even the Anarchy.  I think there is a reason that user response has been so positive on the Frantic and Versa Max.  Both balls have higher rg, symetrical cores than are being used in the premium lines, and seem to perfrom better for a lot of bowlers than do the lower rg asymetricals when matched with aggressive shells

Good point. I have both types of cores. I generally throw low rg stuff, though. You would think that if the playing surface hasn't changed much there wouldn't be a need for the balls to change that much. But, then they wouldn't have anything to sell and we wouldn't be hit with all the eye candy they produce. This furthers my point about leaving balls in production a bit longer. No need for a new ball every 6 months. That's crazy. Starting to sound like I may be throwing my Virtual Energy a bit more on the shot I'm looking at.
