Looking for ways to help improve city tournament.
« on: May 07, 2012, 11:47:22 AM »
I just moved back to my hometown. City tournament was never real big. They just finished up this years tournament. A little about the city. We have 4 centers in town. Plenty of people bowling every night of the week.
This year for city tournament they had 17 teams, and only 31 people bowl all 3 events. This is the worst I have seen. Now I have been away from the town for about 5 years so I don't know what the last 5 years have been like. Some of the problems with the time they run the tournament is that it is also the same time as the state tournament and also when a lot of people are at nationals.
To help fix this I know moving the dates would be an idea. Only problem is that there is a center in town that runs a tournament on the weekends for about two months shortly before this. Just wondering when everyone else has their city tournaments and what the results are? Even if I don't get back into bowling I want to try to help improve the sport in the city not just for kids but for adults as well. Any help will be appreciated.

The problem is that the 4 centers don't get along, especially with the house that had the tourney this year so I'm sure they weren't making it known to well that the tourney was going on. Thus was the first time in a long time that this house had it because of the other tourney they run. Also there is no money on the city tourney so your bigger bowlers won't bowl. Nice to have you back in town kyle.

A city tournament is pretty much only for bragging rights or to get into the local hall of fame.  I can't think of any city tournament near me that pays anything good, or a lot of bowlers bowl in.

It's just something very few are interested in.

Justin I agree with you 100% about the centers not getting along. I hope that if the Midco league continues that will help things. I doubt it will but I hope. Something has to be done to improve things in the city. I saw the results and thought it was a flat out joke. I still think the time it is bowled needs to be adjusted but to when? I guess maybe it is time to shake things up within the board.......

Kyle,

Our team just didn't have the time to bowl tournament this year, I  can tell you that Sport Bowl did have handouts about the tournament our last few weeks of league.  A different time would help I agree with your comment on that.

Mark I remember working at Eastway when Mike was running city. Turn out was ok, nothing great. But to see these results, what a damn joke. Don't know if there is a way to fix it but damn I want to help Jason get that going better. I want to help the bowlers of the city to get it better. Question is HOW?

I have been elected as 1st VP of our association.  I am going to suggest (strongly) that the board members to go each league and talk to each team on the leagues.  We have two big houses that do not get along, but the board members can still walk in, talk to the leagues, and hand out entries.  That is the plan anyway.

Our city tournament has the same problems. My first thought is to move the tournament up to the start of the season when people are fresh back into bowling and before everything else starts going. Most leagues start around the middle or end of August, so why not have city tournament at the end of September first of October. Our Junior city tournament use to be held at the time and it makes more sense because when they have it latter in the season, Late February, early March you have Nationals, State, Mens Southern, and other events. Plus many bowlers start to lose interest when spring rolls around.

It is an easy fix that makes a lot of sense.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

That is what I was thinking. Get one tournament of the year out of the way right away. I do like that idea. Something to think about. Having the board members going to talk to the leagues is good, however I don't think that will help. Worth a shot though. Maybe when the league meetings are going on have a board member there to ask what can be done to make it better.

Have EVERY member pay an extra dollar into your local association fee when every league bowler pays sanction fees.  For example if it is $19, just thave them pay $20 to be sanctioned at the begining of the year.  If you have 1,000 bowlers that is an additional $1,000 into the prize fund. Plus people feel vested if they know they have are added money from their own pocket.

You might want to contact Jerry Rippe, secretary of the Fort Wayne Bowling Assoc., for some suggestions.  They average 300 to 350 teams in their city tournament and is held in 2 houses over 3 weekends.
