The guys using cleaner and going with the lane shine are the smart ones imo.  The guys using nothing at all are the guys who whine about how all Storm balls die after 100 games.  Balls will usually naturally settle down some regardless but they don't usually die if you clean them after every session (have yet to have one die).  I think its still a better idea to buy a middle of the road ball (cheaper too) for THS and clean it religiously (91% rubbing alcohol if nothing else is dirt cheap) than buy a top shelf hook in the box and let it get oil logged.  Some lane shine is fine and even helpful as you mention but eventually you do get a bad track that forms.  When I get rid of tracks I will often use Royal Compound to kind of emulate lane shine on some of my balls after the resurface.  Still I can understand especially for guys without a spinner how lane shine could be very useful.

Lots of vids on u tube of solid balls being scanned after some lane shine and they all seem to end up around 5000 grit. I got a turmoil for a heavier shot and the oob was not enough for my shot but I have an old Swerve with lane shine thats money for the medium patterns with some friction,probably around 5000. I figure surface to how the ball performs for me on certain conditions kinda like cooking to taste vrs. Just following a recipe.

I am quite the opposite, as I dislike the reaction of shiny pearls out of box.  A few games of wearing down the polish (or a trip to the spinner) give me the look I like.
