what do you aim at?
« on: July 03, 2003, 07:37:52 AM »
What's your point that you look at on the lane to aim on your approach? On corner shots I can aim at the arrows, and I am dead on. However, on the strike ball, looking at the arrows does me know good, as I am usually off by quite a bit. What I usually do on my approach is look at my target, then my eyes usually roll down and look towards the foul line. Am I accurate? Not as accurate as I know I can be, but luckily the league I am in right now gives us a good amount of boards to play with. So what do you aim it? What are your eyes fixed on?

It honestly depends on a number of factors.  You've just got to practice enough to know when to use which target.  On a sloppy wet condition, I'll aim at the arrows.  On medium to dry conditions I'll look beyond the arrows to the splices between the boards.

To make matters a little more confusing to you, I have a second target at about 42-43' where I want the ball to turn towards the pocket.  I visualize a line between my target at the arrows/splices and my breakpoint at 42' and try to throw the ball on that line.

Simple, right?

I'm one of the ".. some still PIN bowl." Like those who previously commented .. what's good for the GOOSE isn't good for the GANDER!

I rather use a TARGET further down the lanes then one as close as the ARROWS .. it gives me better length. The actual target is not ALWAYS where I want to hit .. have to give the ball ROOM .. I MAY NOT be as successful as some who post here .. but I'm happy with my game!

I think part of my problem is my eyes are usually not fixed on a target, I look at my target where I want to shoot at(whatever the target may be), but then as I get closer to the line, I look down towards the foul line. I am sure that contributes to not being consistant in hitting my marks, is it normal to do this? I don't remember ever keeping my eyes on my target without looking down. Has it worked, well yes kind of...but I am sure if I were to keep my eyes fixed on a target I would increase my accuracy and improve my scores.

Does anyone do that? Look down as you approach the line? Or are your eyes always fixed on the target?

If you use the Dots, be careful as since they are closer to foul line, a lot of people start leaning forward and get their timing, delivery, and leverage all messed up.

I find it interesting so many use the dots
and the foul line dots. I can target several places
on the lane, but went back to the foul line and really
feel very strong with the close focus. Its really more
a focus for execution as  I can lay the ball down early
and release at the bottom very close to my ankle.
The leverage I get is so much better. I can lift my eyes
and see the ball cross at the arrows.
I usually wear my glasses (tri-focals) to bowl but
decided that I could see better without them, so no more dumb glasses.
Of course I have bowled enough to know what works so great today
may be all wrong for another time.
Also Liz Johnson and Tish Johnson use the foul line as a focus point.
Since todays game is played on more oil it helps to get that ball
on the lane early. John Jowdy is also known for saying lay the ball on the foul
line.      Versatility    got to have it      GS
