help with Rolling out..?
« on: September 15, 2009, 10:26:00 PM »
I have questions about why the ball rolls out and stops hooking. Can someone explain/ help please? My ball reaction tends to be a mid lane roll. Ball speed 15-16mph tweener, and I stay behind the ball. I was using a Ebonite Magic pin under, practicing after lanes where used by a 3 people team league. What's the solution to keep the ball hooking? I want to be able get that skid/snap reaction. Is it the cover/core/or drilling that's causing it?

For example, if you see Chris Barns play way deep, sometimes you'll notice his ball rolling out too...example

Chris Barnes doesn't usually see the ball "roll-out". Whenever I've seen him play on tv, he seems to like to play a hook-set reaction, which helps him control the backend reaction. This is usually achieved through a mix of the right equipment with the right layout. I've got a couple of balls with this kind of reaction shape, both very different drillings but generally:

Solid coverstock, large angle between the pin-CG line and pin-PAP line (can't remember what that angle is called) should help you achieve this kind of reaction. I have a jolt with aobut 120-130° and a Hy-Road with about 90° that both can get this hook-set reaction. I'm sure there are other combinations though, best ot ask your pro shop...

Hook-Set is also achived by very good release control, just to delay the ball's break point enough to have the ball roll but not lose too much energy due to a too early roll phase. Tricky, esp. when the pattern changes.

Anyway, an idea to check: do you know whether your Magic flares towards its PSA or towards the pin? From behind it can be hard to tell, but sometimes, with a strong layout, the pin accidently is placed too close to the PAP and it flares the wrong way - you get a rather rolly ball with little back end, which easily loses power and can hit weak.

Since you do not provide a PAP, I cannot be sure if this is a potential error source - but if the ball has a strong pin position (or your PAP shifted upwards recently), this can also be the reason for your weak back end reaction.

I have seen this already several times when players wanted a "strong hook" and had their high end equipment drilled to the max - and the disappointment was big because the ball would more or less fail.

Chris also has the amzing gift to do it through hand position over all of his equiptment..U can get a type of hook set out of any ball if you know what to do with your hand.. But their are layout that promote it.. Wes is very good at it also

It could aldso be too strong of a ball/drilling for the volume of oil you are seing.

1.  Use polished equipment or weaker equipment
2.  Speed the ball up
3.  Find a line where there's more oil
4.  Reduce your revs
5.  Increase your axis tilt and/or axis rotation (for the advanced bowler)  --  JohnP

The easiest thing to try is to hit the ball with some polish. I think a lower pin would roll sooner than a higher pin drill,so that is a more drastic solution to more length.
