My corporate league may be interested in running brackets at my suggestion to get some money into the prize fund for the end of the year and to satisfy some of the more competitve people in league.

Heres the deal.

My game is really starting to come around within the past couple of weeks in this house, and was pretty close to nailing down a 700 last week.
My average is really under rated right now from the lane man modifying the shot each week, its 80% of 200, I'm over 200 so I would be bowling scratch along with 1 other person in the league. These are mostly stomp and spray bowlers on a pretty tough crown shot.

Do I get involved in these brackets if:

#1 Im running them.
#2 I know im going to win it more often than not, from being one of the higher average bowlers in the league.
#3 I dont want to piss off everyone in the league by taking head to head seriously each game.

What would you do?
Go for the $$$ or the potential to piss people off in other departments in the building?

Only person in the league thats in my department is on my team, and has a competitive nature like myself.

Simple solution.  Set the brackets up, and then have somebody else run it (take money, etc.)

I think starting and running the BRACKETS will make you look like a GOOD GUY .. getting into them when you FAR OUTCLASS the players will make you look like a CRUMB! Your choice!

That's the best answer. Regardless, if there is a lot of disparity in league  talent, you'll find that few will continue in brackets after they realize they have no chance. So, the bottom line is that it probably won't last.

On a side note, I could never figure out why any handicap league would have a compute base (in your case, 200) that's less than the highest average in the league. Also, with a lower average base 'for fun' league such as yours, 90% would be a more appropriate percentage figure.

So if you were to change the league handicap to say 90% of 215, you might have a chance for a viable bracket scheme.

Just to make sure my "personal life" didn't interfere with my "professional life", I would not participate.  All it takes is one yahoo crying foul in the league and the possibility of hard feelings spilling over into work can become a real issue.  Therefore, I would feel the risk/reward is not worth the return, unless maybe you hate your job and plan to quit within the next year anyway.

Maybe you and the other high average bowler could limit the number of brackets you get in each week.  The other bowlers may feel better knowing they won't always have to compete with you.

Change the handicap. Make it more competitive or difficult for you to win. It will give the low average bowlers the advantage. So when you do win it will hopefully be a nice payday and the lower average bowlers will only have themselves to blame. Sure you might still lose some players but most will still participate.

I was feeling very strongly against getting into the competition from the get go to be honest. I love my job as a Database Administrator, I wouldnt trade it for anything.

This would have worked if they didnt ease up on the shot, I spoke with Tom the lane man, and apparently there were a lot of complaints from the below average bowlers about the shot last season, which was 3:1. Most of the yank & jerk'ers are up a good 15 pins from last season. I just shake my head some of the scores knowing what kind of bowler they are. I'm pretty disappointed because I signed up for this league to get a challenging shot based on the past 3 years. Instead the lane man has been switching up multiple easier shots, so I guess it evens out a bit, but still doesnt solely focus on shot making like I wanted it to.

remember brackets are a one game competition, you have to beat that guy in that game, even the lower average guys can have a great game.  I am far from the highest average in my league and I still win my share of scratch brackets each week.  brackets are great cause anything and everything can happen.  just because you are running them should not preclude you from taking part, it is a random draw, and you still have to beat that one guy and if they are handicap you shoot 210, opponent is a 180, shoots 200, beats you by 10 sticks.  it is gambling and if others feel that you are better and they cant win then they should stay out of them

thats is tne great thing about brackets, anything can happen, I have lost all my brackets while shoot 720+ and i have won them all by going sub 600

How about stepping outside of what your league does?

Instead of computing handicaps at 80% of 200, calculate them based on 80% of 230.  Now everyone is handicapped and the potential of inequity is somewhat diminshed.

Have a higher handicap percentage (90% ?) and make it from 220 or the highest average in the the league.  Also you can limit the number of brackets you take.
