Be Honest, Would you Quit bowling if .........
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:22:09 AM »
If you lived in a area that only had 1 bowling alley and the next closest bowling alley was 30miles away, and the house you bowl in put out a tougher shot????  either by flattening out the House shot, or by putting out one of the Kegel Challenge shots??

I ask this because yesterday while practicing I got to talking to the GM of bowling alley i goto about possibly putting out a tougher shot to practice on...

And I brought up something about why they dont "toughen" up the shot a bit?  He reply'd that he did toughen up the shot a bit lol..  which kinda made me laugh cuz I'm averaging higher than i did last yr...    But I asked why "they" or as in the house doesnt use something like a Kegel Challenge pattern, which is what is used for our State tournament...

His response was, most bowlers would quit...  And I said something towards the fact of, no other bowling alley being within 30miles of here...   And they could basically put out w/e pattern they want, and bowlers would just have to deal with it...

His response was, "they would quit, they would quit bowling...and just do something else."

He also brought up, how one friday nite this season he accidently put out the Highway to hell challenge pattern..  and out of the 18- 5 man teams, there was 1 or 2 600's a couple 500's and the rest was in the 400's...  He said he never seen so many 100 to 130 games by so called "good" bowlers...

But anyways,,,,  would you just quit if your house made the shot a bit tougher???

Nope. I'm a bit of a freak, though. I like a challenge. Also, I know exactly how "good" I really am.

No, I would not quit.

But be prepared for the sandbagger question at any HDCP tournaments you enter the following year.

Most house hacks would pick up and go somewhere else if they started putting out sport shots for a regular league that is used to THS

some guys would step up and like the challenge
most would blame it on the house saying they are putting out a bad shot

I use Kegel Challenge patterns in my league.  32 teams x 4 bowlers. Ego's get checked and for the bowler wanting to attempt to excel on a broader base (tournamnets etc) it is great.  However most THINK they are skilled and can not check their ego at all and might attempt to complain.  The answer is it is one league only and their are 6 other nights for easier house shots.  Aslo I place the pattern out Friday nights and it there to practice to learn the skill set to excel on the patter.  Buffet bowling is what i call it.  You get options, you want tough it is here, easy it is here but at least you get to choose and not handed what you get with no choice.  Also you can not change in mid league / season.  It must be told / explained at week one and all are aware for what they sign up for.

Not a chance, I used to drive 30 miles to get a good challenging shot and league.

Our house is like 3 miles from where I live and I have though about quitting several times this year if that answers your question.

I am not a fan of extreme league conditions.  My definition of extreme:  Flat flooded or very dry conditions.  Paying around $15 per league night and knowing that I'll be lucky if I shoot 500 scratch is not my idea of enjoyment.  In that respect, I can think of a bunch of other things I'd rather put my money towards.  Just my .02

Most of the bowlers on here wouldn't quit.  People on here tend to want that challenge.  However, the bowlers on here are in the minority.

I bowl in a men's league and if they put out one of the challenge patterns or even a short PBA X pattern, the league would fold at the start of the next year.

I was originally intrigued by the idea of bowling in a PBA Experience League.  That is until I bowled in one last Summer.  Our center put down what they "thought" were the proper patterns.  Turned-out that every 5 or 6 lanes had a different shot down every week instead of the entire league bowling on the same shot.  I don't know if it was the mechanic(s), the oil machine, or the combination of both, but it was a disaster.  It left a very bitter taste in my mouth as well as others.  So I am a bit biased here.  Nevertheless, I think that will be the last time they attempt to hold a PBA X league...

I bowl at a house roughly 35 miles away with what could be considered a easier house shot shorter oil on the lighter side. Most of the house bowlers go straight up five and consider the eight board playing inside. I actually enjoy bowling with the heavier oil, tougher patterns.
Recently bowled a tourney with a 40ft  flatter pattern, I think it was 8 guys from our house there, 2 bowled a second squad to try to do better, I had family obligations and had to leave. The other 5 left crying on how hard it was,  had to hit the same spot twice.
Typical league bowlers do not want to get better they want 15boards to spray the ball all over.

Our state tournament has put out the Kegel Beaten Path the last two years. I did hear many good bowlers say that they would not go back next year. This year the tournament was 40 miles away next year 3 hours away. The complaints were many but it mainly had to do with ego. "I'll be damned if I'll waste my time shooting 570 next year".

Used to be 600 was good - not anymore. You had to grind out 620. I did see it as a fair challenge.

That is sad because if you put out the walls the professional amatures will clean house.

It is funny that those who go to nationals usually realize that it is tougher and I bet rarely do they go to the Service Desk and complain that the shot was "To Difficult"

Those bowlers should ask the center they frequent to at least prepare them if they want to go to tournaments by putting out the pattern for them to practice?

I'm all for toughing up lane conditions.

But I will say I don't believe most are honest in saying they would continue bowling if their average dropped 40 pins.

As far as putting out harder shots for tournaments.

If it is a handicap tournament you have given the advantage to the lower average bowlers. Higher averages are more dependent on lane conditions being favorable. Lower average bowlers will not know the difference.
