Been leaving a lot of 5-7s lately....
« on: October 25, 2005, 03:36:09 PM »
What are some of the things that might cause this?  I'm talking, of course, of pocket 5-7s.  I guess perhaps I'm just not getting the drive I need, but it seems to be happening consistently the last 2-3 weeks in leagues.  I've been throwing primarily my newer Uturn Pearl and I also threw my new Power Drive with similar results tonight.  I know you can't see me bowl, but maybe there are some general things I should think about?  Maybe I'm not getting enough fingers in the ball, or perhaps they are burning up a bit, and hence hitting a little weak?  I'm a medium speed low rev player playing primarily up the 2nd arrow with a nice turn into the pocket.

I did just realize something else, and that's that before I seemed to play more of a skid/flip into the pocket up the 2nd arrow, where now it seems like more of a steady arc with my new equipment.  I had been using a V2 Power and before that a Sling Blade.  Also, the house I bowl in are old wood lanes with synthetic pin decks.  It's not a huge wall set up there, but there is a THS kind of pattern on the heavier side.  Thoughts?

Lack of power.  Either from not enough entry angle or the ball burning up.  Probably the former, though I have no idea what type of ball a power drive is.  Then again, you did say you used to have a good backend but now they arc, that probably means the oil has increased and the ball is having a tough time moving and not creating enough friction to drive into the pins...

If its a THS on the heavier side, I'm betting you want to be around 6,7 or 8 board at breakpoint, not going straight up 10. Last year I bowled all season on a longer THS (43' pattern) and it was very heavy oil inside of 9 board, so much so that you needed to have a ton of hand to even try crossing the oil inside there...

If you wish to use your Power Drive or UTurn Pearl, you're going to have to play the drier portions of the lane, as it seems that up the 2nd arrow you are just skidding and skidding, and when the ball does get into any sort of hook, it's lost all energy and hits the pocket flat.

Personally I would start the night with stronger equipment and work my way down from there if I'm not getting the ball reaction I desire.

I agree with Andy.  Either you did not put "fingers" into that particular shot or you played the oil too much resulting in too much skid into the pocket.  And then there's the "threw it too far right and the ball travelled back, just was dead on arrival".

By the way....I move 5 1/2 boards off my strike shot and pick this up maybe 90% of the time.  (5 boards if you have slower ball speed, but that 1/2 board is important).  I know I pick it up more then I pick up the baby split, which is really sad considering the amount of practise it took to get there.  I've left this split so many times its not funny.  Plus I've left 7  5,7,10s.  I really don't like heavy oil.  But I am getting better.

I guess part of the problem is I still haven't mastered the "swing."  I just have a hard time pushing it a bit to the right, and have more success throwing it straight.  I have been working on that, though, and perhaps its something I need to keep doing.  I'll also try going back to my V2 Power and see if that makes a difference at all.

I'd say it is probably that you aren't getting enough fingers through the ball. My guess would be that you have your wrist in a good position until the release where you might drop it and have your hand on top of the ball. Just try to keep your hand under the ball all the way through your release.

Any other thoughts on this?  I still seem to be throwing a really "weak" ball, where before I was making big improvements.
