So I never have bought into the need for a reviver oven, as I've had great success using a 5-gallon bucket and Dawn. It takes some time, but it's a lot more economical than purchasing an oven for the shop....anyways.

I had a brainstorm the other day around what to use as a "cleaner"....I was thinking about a good degreaser that is non-abrasive. Then it hit me...there is a chemical that is SPECIFICALLY designed to bond with lane oil and make it water soluble....better than Dawn...

Lane Cleaner?

The only drawback might be some sort of negative effect on the coverstock so I have been experimenting with a couple of balls that I know were very "dead". I will say that I was shocked at how well it worked...I mean the balls are both like brand new. I will continue to experiment on my stuff and some buddies' old balls before using it on a customer's ball....

Anyone else tried this?

Our former lanes manager gave me a bottle of lane cleaner. I mixed it about 50-50 with water. It did an excellent job of cleaning the ball. It left the ball with the clean, tacky feeling. I would do it again if I could get more of it.

Yup, as a head tech in a bowling alley the best thing I've found is 1/4 of a Fizzion tablet in a bucket of hot water, drop the ball in, give it 20 min or so, finish it off with some clean hot water. Then dry it & polish it. Like new! Brilliant!

The first ball I did this to was an Invasion that had about 500 games on it (probably more). It was totally dead....bled it in very hot tap water (140*) for about 10 hours total. The ball is seriously like brand new after taking it back to box finish.

I have a DV8 Reckless that is getting a little lazy downlane...going to try it with that next. I used the center's lane cleaner and diluted it to a pretty weak mixture, as I figure the amount of solvent needed would be so small compared to the mixture that is used to clean the lanes.

Forgive my ignorance in asking this question but does this in anyway affect the integrity of the coverstock? Just wondering if the 10 hours in hot water or the repeated use of lane cleaner might weaken the durability of the shell. Just trying to learn. :-)

Great question...and the answer is I don't know. There are 2 angles to your question:

- The repeated soaking and heating....well you have a ball that is "dead", meaning the cover is saturated and can't make friction with the lane anymore. So if there is any damage from the repeated heating, the alternative is to have an expensive doorstop or spare ball. I have been doing this for years though and never had any negative effects on coverstocks.

- The chemical is the unknown here, and so far I have only done it to experimental pieces, no customers balls have experienced this. Logic tells me the lane cleaner should be fine, as it's used on the lanes themselves. However I'll find out on a few of my balls and a buddy or two's before going public with it.

As we all know, too much heat is a no-no for bowling balls, but it has been tested with numerous bowling balls and as long as you stay below that 130-140 threshhold there seems to be zero ill effects on the coverstock; though I am sure accidents happen and you're always succeptable to cracking anytime you quickly change temperatures.

As far as water goes, I talked with a storm rep at the shop one night about it. He told me that both the resin and the filler inside are 100% impervious to water. You can soak a ball all night long and it will not soak the water like a sponge at all (according to him anyway). He also said that the need to cover the thumbhole or finger holes is a myth, just toss the whole thing in, unless you have tape in the holes as that may be ruined.

If this continues to work and I can figure out the dilution that is ideal, I'll order them for people at pretty much cost. They are only available for pro shops and bowling centers, as they are not a retail item. I think you drop 2 tablets in 5 gallons of water, but probably a lot more water for simply bleeding a ball as the amount of oil needed to dissolve is really small.

Agreed. Only high volume shops can justify a Revivor. We have an old cabinet with heat lamps installed and a thermometer. I have thought about working out a way to install a small fan or to make the balls rotate but what we have been using for 4 years works fine.

The down side is we have to set the timer on our phone and wipe/rotate the ball every 10 minutes by hand. We have cracked 2 balls in 4 years, both of which were already succeptable to cracking. (Infinite One, Total NV)

Used to do the hot water bath like Russell is talking about. I would use the purple commercial floor degreaser that you see in restuarants. We have a local guy that uses this stuff as one of the ingredients to his own ball cleaner. It is highly effective and USBC certified. But I candefinitely see lane stripper as being even better at it.

I agree. Tape doesn't do well over time. You'll want some 'goo be gone' when you want to remove it.
