Heh, I posted the same thing a few weeks back, only thing thats different, is that I may be moving to South Carolina, so I asked the same thing basically.  Only thing I got out of anyone, was that everybody down there talks funny.

I came from LINDENHURST LI. Bowling there was always exciting .. two leagues a night, and tournaments were always available. Access to NJ or PA was only a short drive and bowling was an every week-end event. Big thing was leagues were MOSTLY ALL MEN .. here in NC (RALEIGH) that doesn't happen.

I've been in RALEIGH NC for 6 years. It took a while to get use to but it is a nice place to live. I'm much older then you so I can't tell you about entertainment .. but bowling here isn't as big as it was back in LI. There are a number of Centers within 40 minutes of my home (roughly 6). There are leagues most night but the number of teams can vary .. rarely do you get leagues with more then 10 teams. I don't think there are ANY MALE ONLY leagues unless you work for a company like IBM .. all leagues are MIXED. I've answered FLIERS announcing new leagues only to find the league DOESN'T form (not enough bowlers).

There are tournaments locally but not as many as were available in the METRO area.

I've found some EXCELLENT bowlers down here .. but POT BOWLING/BRACKETS seem to be eaten up by the same bowlers leaving you not to many choices.

People wise .. NC is a standout. Once you get to know your way around it is a very enjoyable place to live. LAWS are a lot different here .. stay straight and you will be ok .. cross over and you WILL PAY!

I don't think NC is going to beet Syracuse in bowling. Weather, maybe. Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo are pretty active in bowling. NC might be good, but your going to notice a difference.

I too live in upstate NY about 60 miles west of Syracuse and my wife and I are also talking about moving to NC near the Fayetteville area. My daughter
(11 years old) is in to bowling heavy and I need to find out if the schools in NC have bowling teams. She can try out for the school team next year, the bowling coach has seen her bowl this year in her sat. morning league and has told me shes a lock to make the team already.
I'd hate to move and take that oppertunity away from her if the schools in NC
don't have bowling teams.

If you look more to the middle of NC like Raleigh and Greensboro you are only 3 hours from the beach, and 3 hours from the mountains in asheboro.

I think you meant Ashville.  Ashboro is in the Piedmont, not too far from Greensboro.

And, Joe Falco, I have very good memories of Raleigh, I went to N. C. State in the 60's.  Boy, has it changed since then.  But the last time I was there, Western Lanes still looked the same from outside.  --  JohnP

John .. RALEIGH has changed tremendously since the 60's. I've been here since 1999 and I've seen some BIG changes .. This 540 road they put in (still not complete) has done wonders for travel! Most obvious change is the amount of LAND you get with the purchase of a house .. builders are cutting down on the LOTS making the amount of land you get smaller then a LOT back in NYC! Although TAXES are in an UPWARD trend .. it's nothing compared to what I was paying in LINDENHURST LI. Overall .. it's a great place to live .. I miss my ATLANTIC CITY .. BIG NEWS .. lottery will start in NC in 2006 .. can CASINO's BE FAR BEHIND?
