Benchmark Ball?
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:52:21 AM »
I am a cranker with 468 RPM''s and 17-18 MPH ball speed. I''m looking for a good benchmark ball, preferably a solid coverstock and sanded. I was thinking the Reign of Fire or Mutant Cell drilled control. What do you guys recommend?

I would agree with MrPerfect. If you like Storm, something like the Furious or HyRoad would be very good benchmark balls.  Furious has the same cover as the Reign of Fire with a different core (and different OOB finish~2000gr).  Hy Road is a Hybrid cover but a very controllable ball.  From your own recommendations, I know you would like to use a newer, high end ball, but those are pretty strong and very hard to recommend as benchmarks.

Check out an Ogre Solid from Visionary. Good control from a solid coverstock that lasts.

VISIONARY!!!!  Ogre solid.  Best part, you wont be taking the ball back to the pro shop complaining of lost ball reaction after every 50 games.

Furious and Ogre Solid are excellent choices as benchmarks. You might need to take the surface of the Ogre from the stock 600 grit US/CAMI to P2000 or P4000 grit because of your rev rate. B'wick Diamondback could also need a slightly smoother surface for it to be your benchmark.

Gamebreaker has been discontinued for a while and could be hard to get. It has a very low RG that could problem with your rev rate.

Hammer Onyx Vibe could a good benchmark for you also.

I see several good suggestions here for you, you don't always need the latest and strongest hooking ball especially for a benchmark ball IMO.

I also agree with those who said that practice is not the same as league.  With 8 or 10 on a pair they are going to breakdown and transition differently than when you are bowling by yourself or with 1 or 2 others.  Just because you are 14 and can bowl big scores on the house shot does not make you the latest and greatest thing to bowling.  I enjoy seeing young people bowl and do well, I had the opportunity this winter to bowl next to the top high school bowler in our area on the USBC pattern.  While he would most likely cream me on the THS I beat him by 95 pins on it.  Tone down the attitude a little and listen to what these guys are trying to tell you most of them have been bowling for several more years than you have been alive.

Good luck!
