Best advice you ever gave or got!
« on: August 05, 2004, 02:39:37 AM »
Best advice I ever gave was to this little kid bowling bantams. She was about 7. She put the ball directly above her head when she go up to bowl. Red lights went off on me, little kids hit in head with bowling ball.

People told me for years to go from 3 to 4 step bowling.
I over heard some snobby hammer guys knocking me, comment was "there's a perfect example what not to do!"

Nicely told I tried once, but over hearing them guys, I stuck with it last summer and can now bowl better than ever, old age and all. (smile)

Nasty comments overheard may hurt, but sometimes they're right.

Best advice as a teen, was an older gent who explained throwing at 10 or 11 o'clock will give me a curve. Back when lanes were wood and balls we still rubber.

I dont give much sound advice, or good so I dont know about that. Best advice I've ever gotten was, "you suck at bowling, just quit". LOL JK. Best bowling advice was probably to learn to free my armswing and not cross over my body.

Hey TheBowlingKid25,
I'd just like to know what you mean by "not cross over my body" in your previous post.

The best advice I've ever gotten was also "free armswing...don't force anything."  Also to "play pretend!", meaning throw the ball over your arrow to a pretend point on the lane (breakpoint) without 'trying' to hook the ball.  The ball will come back!

Sorry, I meant not to have my arm swing cross over to the opposite side of my body.

Must agree 1000% here.
Used to be able to make 10 with my eurothane and violet hammer but with my Turbo diesel, no way in he**

Must admit though, when you only have a 168, feels weird to carry an extra ball. When I told local owner Parker told us everyone needs a plastic spare ball........ We can't have everyone with 2 or more balls up there!!

Hmm, wonder if they could make some house balls fingertip that many could use and not need to drag our plastics around.

I learned with a 16 pound ball because my fingers weren't comfortable in the so called lady weights.

the best advice i ever received was, "roll the ball---don't spin it". the best advice i ever gave was, "move farther left on the approach if you want to make the 10 pin".

I received some good advice from Del Warren.

LESS IS MORE

with todays equipment being more aggressive and with stronger cores.

It makes sense

I'm debating the spin issue. No one pointed it out before it became a habit. I do strike more when I spin it the right way. BUt spares are harder.
My son said I shouldn't try to get rid of the spin but learn how to shoot a straight shot again like when I began back in the 70's.

proudmama, when marshall holman used to do the play by play for espn, he stated that hooking the ball is caused, "by mostly forward roll with a little side roll". this is what i mean by roll not spin.

Yes, I urinate on my ball...it doesn't give me better reaction or make my hands tougher.  It just makes me feel better.
