Best All Around Ball
« on: December 04, 2003, 10:20:26 PM »
Tis the season and all.

What do you get a pretty decent bowler who will never really bring more than 1 ball and a spare shooter?  What matches up accross the widest breadth of conditions?  Price doesn't really matter.  I figure it's more about performance.  I've been really impressed before with a powergroove proactive, and thought that the Icon sucks (apparantly an opinion held by many.)

Each company has to have at least 1 ball that they can really sell to almost anyone.

Storm - X factor
Brunswick - Some monster or of course the Inferno
Ebonite - V2 particle (?)
Roto - Silver Streak (?)
Columbia - Ti Messenger

What do the proshop guys most often recommend?  I'm a league bowler.  Most people I hang out with or would consider buying a ball for are guys who just bowl in a league or two, nothing serious.  Not looking to build an arsonel, just a single ball that rolls better than a gyro.

I would buy a mediumish aggressive pearl or shiny ball, but try to have one that is relatively even.  I would stay away from particles, unless they are particle pearls.

Here is what I would suggest:

AZO: Drastic
Brunswick: Frenzy or Bruiser.
Columbia: Jekyll or Wicked BRT.
Dynothane: Thing or Thing Returns.
Ebonite: Stinger.
Hammer: Blade Pearl or Blade.
Lane One: Emerald.
MoRich: Pioneer.
Roto-Grip: Silver Streak Pearl.
Storm: Tour Power (if you can find one) or X Factor Reloaded.
Track: Crunch Time.
Visionary: Blue Gryphon.

Of these, I would most highly recommend the Thing, which is even, strong, versatile and has a super coverstock that lasts forever so far as I can see.  Three other really superior, forgiving and durable balls are: (a) the Crunch Time, which appears to be a superior house condition ball that appears to work of any of the normal house mediums, (b) the Frenzy, which is a very forgiving ball with a good backend that goes over a variety of conditions, (c) Lane One's Emerald, because I have seen a variety of bowlers do well with it over a variety of mediums.  These are not MY choices for favorite or best balls, but the ones from my observation and experience will please about everyone.

Columbias number one sellign ball was Messenger Ti.. Its the most versatile ball out there, i love it. Best ball they ever made. But all the messenger balls are good, so it dosnt matter.

Crimson Red Sledgehammer most versatile of all time, could drill and sand 4 different ways and have just about it all.

Walter Ray Williams MVP ball on the lighter oil side.

Reaction Rev on the medium heavy side.

Phillip Marlowe,

I was just wondering, is there a reason you do not suggest particles?

Yes.  For the most part, particle balls are less durable, hook earlier than comparable reactives and don't get comparable length, which is something you need for versatility.  In my opinion, only a few particle pearls are sufficiently versatile to be a primary ball out of the bag.

I would say Lane 1's discontinued BlueBerry Buzzsaw...

It is a very even rolling ball, and even left in the stock highly polished coverstock, the Brunswick Powercoil coverstock can read just about any lane condition very well. Also if you the coverstock is probably the most adjustable coverstock on the market, sanded it reacts like a partical, polished and it acts more like a resin, but with out an excessive over-under.

The core is the Lane 1 diamond, but with the dual mini nuggets, it gets an increabile midlane read. It is a smooth rolling ball, with a hard but controllable arc in the back of the midlane.

You can play any lane with this ball, if you are willing to adjust, the readablity of this ball is incredible.

Lane 1 released the Cranberry Buzzsaw, with a longer read, and a snappy back end, but this ball will not read oil nearly as well as the BlueBerry.

If you can pick one up, I would highly recommend it.

Yeah Brimar,
What's the deal?  I was asking a legitimate question.  I found Fencer's Response quick and thorough.

I am going with the Blueberry also. Does everything LeftE said too. Hard to find NIB but a used one works just as well.
Funny how that company swore up and down about how much better the Cranberry was going to be. Enough said. Good day Lane1!

Im going to say the old Purple Rhino Pro. I could use that ball on almost any condition and i wish i still had it. My red alert is pretty versatile but no wheres near what that rhino was. Most of the newer ball i have purchased in last 3 years (mostly track and storm) have been WAY less versatile. Just my 2 cents.

Brian

p.s. id like to get my hands on a tour power.

Depending on if your a big hooker or not, if you are don't worry about what I have to say but if you more of a relaxed bowler that lets the ball do the work I'd surggest the Rebel ECX, its very versatile.
