Remember commercials are money in the bank.  Money in the bank is prize funds.
Large prize funds equals more interest.

Remember a couple of years ago when nobody made 200,000 and no 6 was like 65000.
Noboby wants to watch or get involved with a sport where no 10 in the world needs to live with his mother!

I live about an hour from KC, so I usually have friends over to watch the Chiefs games.  Even as mediocre as they've done this season, I've found that I rarely request to watch a bowler take a shot over flipping back to see a play in the football game, and mostly because you have to wait FOREVER to see any bowling, especially in between games.  I think they're trying to dumb it down to get more people interested, but your average bowler is going to be worse than a scratch bowler.  "Oh, well the pros should strike every ball, so I don't think they're that great."  It's that kind of mentality that's going to disenchant them.  For the rest of us, I don't have to see big scores, I like to see good bowling.  I like being able to tell if it's going to be a strike at the arrows, I just like to watch BOWLING, and as Joe Falco said, avoid those stupid commercials that have now become more frequent.  

Right now, all they're showing is that bowlers horse around, eat lots of chicken, and apparently like Nascar, seeing as how Labonte was in that same Banquet commercial that ran about 10 times a show last year.  Do they still have that same commercial this year?  Over the first couple weeks, I doubt I've watched 15 minutes of both shows combined, and ask anybody how into it I was last year.  I'm just not impressed.

Let the Johnson twins put in their joint opinion (my brother is also an accomplished bowler, but he's on the shelf so far this season -- had some knee surgery over the summer).....Bring back the wild card; let's see 4 matches instead of three --- Yeah, I think they're trying to "dumb" it down, as well ---too much fill, not enough bowling.  Yet we acknowledge that commercials pay the bill and increase the prize funds....  Surely there is a happy medium somewhere.

While I applaud the PBA for their attempts, I just do not believe there is a quick fix for the PBA or for bowling in general.  They did a great job last season, but they set themselves up for a less interesting season this year.  

The entire sport needs a restructuring, and that means sacrafices need to be made by many to make that happen.  210+ bowlers need to bite the bullet and join scratch leagues that bowl on more competitive oil patterns.  The current 230+ bowlers need to bowl on sport patterns with limited bowling equipment.  These are the sorts of things that can revive competitive bowling.  The stunts they are trying on the tv show now and the new exempt field are unfortunately not the right answers.

Once again it seems the decision makers have looked at the problem from the wrong angle, and have tried to implement a quick fix.

The money isnt really better. There are less tournaments same prizefund. There used to be 30-35 tournaments not 20. They have added money to all the majors.
