You can apply most polishes by hand without a spinner. Polishing on top of 1000 grit might be a big jump, but is something you can do cheaply yourself and is easily reversible if it's too much. Normally, from 1000 grit, you would take it to 2000 grit with sandpaper or abralon using a spinner. If you need more length, go to 4000 abralon. If you still need more length, then you try polish. What grit the ball starts out, and what type of polish used will make a big difference. Some polishes change the underlying grit, while some just polish/shine.
