Best Ball for stupid Brunswick Lanes
« on: February 04, 2009, 01:19:24 PM »
Have tried aggressive balls, mild balls, skid flip, and arcing balls, and nothing consistently works.

Don't know if it's a reverse block or wet-dry or what. I do know that I can bowl on oily lanes and dry lanes and even decently on a sport shot, but these lanes are crap!  I need some kind of ball ....polished or dull or sanded or shiny .... that will smooth out the crazy oil pattern...whatever it is.

Any recommendations appreciated.

200 bowler stuck at 170 and below at Brunswick house.

Brunswick lanes offer less friction. Together with flatter (or sometimes strange) patterns, that combination can be deadly. Carry-down is always an issue on anvilanes for me.

Sounds like you are facing with kind a reverse block, or at least lack of friction outside lets you feel like that.

Two suggestions:

1- You can play the oil line
(you need to see the graph though, and start from there). Or even more inside line KEEPING your breakpoint close to strike board, inside of 12-13 boards. Just like you are playing on "long pattern/similar to shark".
According to the oil in the heads and the transition, you can decide for the ball and the drilling and the surface prep.
My choice on those kind of shots would be asymmetric core with higher pin, around 5 to 5-1/2 inches distance considering the flare needed, with smaller drilling angles like 20-25 to smooth it out at the backends. Adjusting the cover would be essential, but I tend to prefer cleaner preparations. Most of the times, I end up playing fall-back shot on such conditions to see the carry I need.

2- You can play outside line, in the oil so to speak.. You need to be very direct and parallel to the gutter. Lower RG core, smoother cover with a control drilling would be my choice. As six pack stated, Copperhead is a great option.

It would be better to know more about your game (PAP, speed, revs, rotation, tilt..) to be more specific.

Hope this helps,

I agree,
we could be more helpful if we had more info about your game and what equipment and layouts you use.I think the copperhead still is a great option for what your describing as long as you don't drill it too strong and expect it to hook the whole lane.
one of the toughest things about playing on Brunswick lanes for me is not figuring out the shot but it's the transition game.I always look to see the type of bowlers I'm bowling with and what they are using and how they play the lanes to clue me in on how the shot will form.if most of the bowlers play up the boards then I want a control piece and play up the boards.if they play across the boards then the shot will open up and I'll pick a piece that I can use to play the open shot.more time then I care for you will have ten guys up there trying to play the shot they want and not how they should and the pattern becomes a mess, that's when it becomes a grinder night, sort of sounds a little like what your experiencing.

It is probably a combination of things, but the first thing I would do is use balls with more surface.  This should smooth out the over under and help the ball read the lane better.

I bowl in two leagues.  One league has a high friction wood surface and the other has low friction new Pro Anvil lanes.  There are balls that will work at one bowling center and not the other center.  It comes down to ball surface.

Hi.  Still at work (and then bowling till wee hours of the morning), so this has to be short, but I am reading and "listening" to the suggestions.

I'm not a golfer, but other than that, the explanation about what is going on does sound similar to what I am experiencing. I have ---on occasion--- tried standing more to the left and throwing a sort of mini-swing out shot TO the 2nd arrow rather than straight over it, and it has worked ...for awhile.

Problem is if I'm trying something different and I don't see dramaticly better results (I don't mean scores, I mean seeing a strong, mixing reaction from the pins on a shot I can replicate frame to frame), I get aggravated and revert back to my regular line. True... it makes no sense if the regular line wasnt working either, but somehow I keep thinking it's easier to tweak that delivery than get the kinks out of a more drastic change.

Can see the flaws in that thinking now, while sitting at my desk. A little tougher when I'm in the heat of battle and wnat to right the ship.
